Kristy Is a Grade 12 Port Perry High School student and will travel to Austria in March for the second half of the exchange program. Austrian exchange student returns home after three weeks in Canada When the Port Perry Star asked Claudia Sommer what she thought of Canada, she re-. plied: "Please, no. I can speak hours about that question." Claudia is a Grade 11 student from Austria. For three weeks she has been staying with Port Perry High School student Kris- ty Richardson. The German-English ex- change was set up by the Austri- an teachers. "(Claudia's school) sent a no- tice tc Zitchener -aying they wanted to exchange their class- es with this province," Kristy explained. Notices were then sent to all German teachers in Ontario en- couraging students to partake in the exchange. Although her whole class isin Ontario, Claudia is the only German exchange student at PPHS. Her other classmates are in Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax and Kitchener. Claudia spent some of her time in Canada accompanying Kristy to her classes, but did a lot of sight-seeing as well. They went to Toronto and Ot- tawa, as well as visiting Cullen Gardens, General Motors, and the Pickering Power Plant. Kristy's family also took Claudia to see Niagara Falls and the Indian Reserve at Curve Lake. Claudia has been studying English for seven years. She said that she found it difficult to communicate during the first few days of the exchange. The German students were not sup- pose to speak their native lan- guage during their time in Can- ada. Whilein Canada, Claudia cel- ebrated her birthday. Kristy, who works at Hank's Pastries, brought home a special birth- day cake. The girls attended a party at an Ajax exchange stu- dents home and more cake was consumed there. By the time this article ap- pears in print, Claudia will be back in Austria. The two girls will be together again when Kristy travels to Graz, Austria on March 6 for a three week stay. Kristy told the Port Perry Star, the exchange program is not funded by the Durham Board of Education but is paid for in full by each student's par- ents. A.W.
