26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, October 31, 1989 Bantams lose 3-2 nail biter to Millbrook Last Wednesday night the Sportsland Bantams hosted the Millbrook No. 1 team and lost a close exciting game 3-2. Millbrook scored twice in the first 5 minutes before Port final- ly realized that this was just another hockey team they were playing and not gods. In fact after the first 5 minutes Port won the rest of the game 2-1. Lindsay Parry got Port on the -scoreboard midway through the first period picking up a loose puck infront of the net. Ryan Picard and Noah St. Amond pick- ed up the assists. Millbrook restored their 2 goa. lead late in the second period anc were able to hold the lead until Sean McEnaney scored on another goal-mouth scramble with 1:26 left in the game. Chris MacLoed and Lindsay Parry picked up the assists. Port then pulled their goaltender but couldn't muster enough of an attack to score the tying goal. Matt Willetts who guarded .the net for Port was outstanding stopping Millbrook on numerous occasions when they were left alone in front of him.' On Thursday night Sportsland travelled to Newcastle and came home 8-3 winners. Port started off strong and jumped into a quick 4-0 lead. Un- fortunately the boys decided that these 4 goals would be enough and quit doing everything that they were doing in building the 4 goal lead. Also at this time a fog was setting in over the ice as it was a warm night out. The fog was so heavy that it made it difficult to see from one end of the ice to the other. After allowing Newcastle to score 3 consecutive goals to cut Ports lead to 1 goal, the boys final- ly woke up a began to play their game again, scoring twice more before the second period ended. In what seemed to be nothing more than a liesurely skate, Port had no trouble handling the home team by a score of 11-3. All in all this was Port's best game so far, with only 34 mins. in penalties. Port ended the first period with a strong 4-0 lead only to have that lead cut to 4-3 early in the second. Scoring in the first for Port was, Mike Gibson, just 6 seconds into the game on a pass from Mike Sorley. Eric Douma added the next goal with Paul Allen and Darren Stitt picking up assists. Then 1 minute later, Jamie Men- zies scored on a nice play from Mark Barkey and Jerry Douma. Mike Sorley closed the scoring for the first on passes from Derek Fitzgerald and Mark Elliot. Beaverton came out strong with 3 straight goals in the second but Port rallied for three of their own to take a 7-3 lead into the third. Scoring in the second for Port were Darren Stitt with two goals on passes from Jason Wienhold on both goals. Bob Fielding added one from Jamie Menzies and Jerry Douma. The third period was all Port's as they racked up 4 more goals in- between a pile of penalties from both teams. Scoring in_the third went as follows, Bob Fielding from Mark Barkey on a fabulous shot that Bob blew past the goalie from centre ice. Then it was Jamie Menzies with his second of the game from Andrew Steele and Jerry Douma. Steele then scored on a nice pass from Eric Douma. And to close out the scoring, Mark Barkey popped one with a minute left from Jerry Douma and Jamie Menzies. Fine goaltending came from Stacey Ballingall and Rick King. Their next game will be Thurs- day, November 2 at Port Perry, Not that easy On Sunday Oct. 29, the Port Perry 1.G.A. Juniors travelled to Woodville to play their third game of the season and discovered that there will be some competition in this league after all. After two easy first games the girls found the Woodville team a little strong as we lost to them by a score of 10 to 2. Although the girls played well their lack of playmaking and the introduction of 3 new young ladies at game time did reflect in the score. We scored twice more but more important- ly did not allow Newcastle any good scoring chances. Ryan Picard and Chad Garvock each scored twice while Jeff Card, Peter King, Chris MacLoed and Noah St. Amond all scored once. St. Amond and Steve Desautels each picked up 2 assists. King, Lindsay Parry, Mike Sluggett, Todd Smart, Scott Wylie and Chad Garvock all pit- ched in with one assist. Special mention should be made of Chris MacLoed who seemed to be the target of the Newcastle players as they con- tinously picked on him and receiv- ed Penalty after penalty for their efforts while Chris kept his cool and watched them go. Also Todd Smart now has a fan club in Newcastle as he impress- ed their fans with his aggressive play after he flattened 2 players on one shift. Each of these players were at least 6 inches taller and 50 pounds heavier than Todd. Two ties, win for Port Over this past weekend, Allens Siding Tweens tied 2 league games and won an exhibition game. On Saturday, we made the long trip to Barrie and played to a 2-2 tie, in a very hard fought and well played game. Tracy Pelow came up hot in goal and robbed Barrie on numerous chances. The girls were down 2-0 when Lyndsay Dutkewich finally beat the Barrie goalie and assists went to Amanda Webb and Shannan Fox. Four minutes later, Lyndsay put a nice pass onto Karen Kitts stick and Karen tied the score and that was the way it ended. It was a very well played game and it showed the girls that their shooting has to improve, as they took a lot of shots right at the goalie, instead of corners. They also learned that they can come back in games, and they showed this again on Sunday when we once again played Broomball shut-outs First game of the day B & R Electric 3 - Blackstock 0. The second period was a dif- ferent story, as we out-scored Mississauga, 5-3, with our last and tying goal coming with 1:51 left in the game, and we hung on for the tie. Mississauga took advantage of our short handed times, to put goals on the board, and in one in- stance, it was only Tracy Pelow and Jennifer Morden to face 3 big forwards, and although they held off Mississauga for about 45 seconds, they eventually were beat. Good effort girls. Karen picked up 2 goals, Lynd- say 1 goal and 2 assists, Shannon 1 goal and 2 assists, Michelle Fitz- patrick and Megan Marlowe, 1 goal and 1 assists each, Amy 2 assists and Amanda Webb 1 assist. This game was video-taped by the teams personal camera crew who travel with them to every game. It premiered on Channel 3 at 2:00 p.m. at the coach's house, where 2 extra large pizzas were devoured and gallons of pop. After it was edited and cen- sored, it was scrapped. Then, all the equipment which was spread from one end of the Good work guys. On Sunday night the team travelled to Manvers and played a very uninspired game losing 4-1. Lindsay Parry scored Port's only goal deflecting a Ryan Picard shot. Unfortunately this was the only highlite of the game for Port as they just couldn't get untracked "The next home game for the Sportsland Bantams is this Wednesday night at 7:40 against arch rival Uxbridge. You won't want to miss this one. Tweens sun-deck to the other, was piled into 3 vans along with the noisiest girls to hit this area, and they headed for Oshawa for an exhibi- tion game with our friends from the Oshawa Regional Tween team. Oshawa gave us a good game and gave us some lessons on checking. Their goalie stopped alot of shots as our girls worked on shooting around the goalie, but occasionally tried to put one through her. The final score did not matter, but Shannon picked up 3 goals and 1 assist, Karen 1 goal and 1 assist, Michelle 2 goals, Amanda 1 assists, Tanya Towns 3 assists, Amy 2 goals and 2 assists, Kim Poppleton 1 assists, and Megan held off until the end of the game before putting one in on her team- mates. Tammy Pillman unfortunately had a pressing engagement and arrived late for the game, but we could hear her cheering us on. Thanks Tammy. A short discussion took place after the game, and the girls are reminded that, "Without defence, we don't have a team," and "If you don't score a goal, you can't win a game." Our next game is at home this Sunday against Etobicoke at 12:30. Good luck girls. Tweens work hard On Saturday, October 28 the Pineridge Sports Tweens took on Bobcaygeon in Port Perry. Although the score was not in our favour it was no indication of the hard work presented by this team. Vicki Stainton was the first to put us on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal. Team work of Vicki Stainton and Kyla McCrae put in our second goal. A beautiful Bowling Our Labatt's Blue Light House Roll-Off was held on Sunday, Oct. 22. Don Durham, Ed Johansen, Claire Watts, Ed Watts, Bill White and Gerry Louvelle were warm- ed up and ready to go by 10 a.m.. The 10 game total pinfall (flat) tournament turned out to be a nail biter - as the high scorer was not determined until the ninth frame of the 10th game. Congratulations to Ed Johansen with the high total of 2239. Don Durham scored a close second with a 2199. Ed now advances to the provincial final to be held on unassisted for Leea Kinnunen . The last hard working goal was scored by Kyla McCrae assisted by Leea Kinnunen. A valiant ef- fort for Lisa Dodd between the pipes. Good skating and deter- mination was put forth for Diana Dempey, Heather Lally, Sarah Coyne, Jean Templeton and Amanda Clouthier.
