RA A EE EE EE EN ER EE AREER REE YY. . . . Me LEME a a ig ul PC ae No shortage of eggs Large bands of youths roamed the streets and busi- ness district of Port Perry Hal- loween night tossing eggs and soaping windows, The Star heard several complaints from area residents about eggs smashed against houses and thrown at cars, in some cases causing damage to the paint. One caller was fuming mad that he will be faced with hav- ing his new car re-painted after it was struck by eggs near Port Perry High School. "I expect to see the win- dows soaped," he said, "but this egg throwing on Halloween is getting way out of hand," he ex- claimed. Staff Sgt. Henry Raectsen, who commands Division 26 of the Regional Police Force, agreed that the egg throwing seems to be getting worse. He said police cruisers were pelted as were some offi- cers who were trying to keep the large groups of young people un- der control. Every available officer and vehicle was on duty Halloween Night, including men in plain clothes and un-marked cars. He said the situation in other areas of the Division (Ux- bridge and Brock Townships) was pretty much the same as in Port Perry. He said he can understand the anger some residents felt when their cars or homes were pelted with eggs. "Where are the parents of all these young people. That's the question I keep asking my- self." And while the Police were kept busy most of the evening, "we are grateful that things didn't get any worse than they were," he said. Halloween pranksters are being blamed for a power fail- ure that lasted about an hour in the west part of Port Perry. Homes in Perry Glen Es- tates, along with two factories on Simcoe Street were without power. Hydro manager Terry Ad- derley said it was the second night in a row that hydro was out due to vandalism. Crews were able to restore power in about an hour, and he said there was no damage to hy- dro equipment. The Scugog Fire Depart- ment in Port Perry reported a relatively un-eventful Hallo- ween Night. Capt. Bill Harrison said the men were called out on just a couple of occasions to shut off hydrants. But aside from that, there were no other calls. In years ast, the fire department has wo kept busy responding to calls where fires have been de- liberately set, especially in iso- lated rural areas of the Town- ship. As for the younger children who enjoy Halloween for the costumes and the fun of trick or treating door to door, the wet weather may have .put a damper on their fun, at least early in the evening. Council angry with contractor Scugog council will be send- ing a letter to the Region of Dur- ham to express their concerns and disappointment over work being done on Ash Street by VISP Construction. Councillor Marilyn Pearce voiced anger at the condition of Ash Street, noting that it was impassible, and the only way out of Victorian Village for those residents is by way of Lorne or Arrow Streets. She told council that there were over ten vehicles lined up on Arrow Street trying to get out one day because there is no other way for them to exit. It was also noted that chil- dren are forced to walk further 'than the distance set by the School Board to get to school be- cause there is no walkway out to 7A highway and Ash Street is closed off. Scugog's Roads Superin- tendent Ronn MacDonald echoed-councillor Pearce's con- cerns saying "those people have put up with enough", and prom- ised council that he will work to make the road passable to vehi- cles this week. "If at all possible we will have sidewalks and base asphalt in this fall", he said. Construction on Ash Street began in mid October, and ex- cept for a few days of bad weather, Mr. MacDonald said VISP has had plenty of time to get the job done. "Weather has not been a problem", he said. Councillor Pearce said she was "fed up" with the type of construction being done in this town, and said VISP has no con- sideration for those living in the area. Mr. MacDonald explained to council that his works crews, and the local contractors in the area are aware of the emotions of residents and try to minimize inconveniences. "Outside con- fragioes just don't care", he said. Police seeking public info (From page 1) youngchild. Up until mid-summer he- was employed :at a factory in Ajax, but was laid off when the plant was closed down. It is not known whether he worked after that. Police continue to treat his death as a homocide. Dental records were used to determine the identification. Further fo- rensic tests to pin-point the ex- act cause of death are on-going, said a police spokesman on Monday. THE COUNTY MERCANTILE - purchase.
