Legionaires shaping up wi The Port Legionaires Pee Wee's completed their most suc- cessful weekend since the start of league play with a home win and a road tie. Friday night, a shorthanded Legionaires team hosted Lindsay. Neil Mueller, Kenton LeFort, Joe Broadworth, and Dave Bourgeois were all unavailable for duty. All hands present came up with a strong skating and passing per- formance to give Port a 51 victory. Early in the third period, Jeremy Geer dug the puck out of the corner and shot it to Daryl Bourgeois who fired it on net. It was stopped but Brent Harper got the rebound and scored the game winner. Nice work boys. Strong goaltending was shown by 'James 'The Octopus' Paterson. Port's Pee Wee B's headed in- to tournament play Friday night "in Oakwood. Oakwood downed Port 3-0 in a hard hitting, check- ing game. James Paterson played a strong game in net and receiv- ed the MVP for Port. Great goaltending James! Port went on to play Bracebridge Saturday morning. Again they faced a bigger, stronger team and lost 6-0. Ian McCready played a strong defen- sive game and was awarded Port's MVP. Way to clear the puck Ian on a man short! Port came up with spirit and determination in the third game and won 5-1 against Oshawa Bruins. Oshawa scored the only goal in the 1st period. It was Ports - game after this. Passing and checking paid off as Sandy Mark picked the top right corner. Assists to Ian Shrigley and Mike Labanovich. Port ended the tournament in style with a 3-2 win in overtime against Oshawa Red Wings. Brent Harper started the scoring for Port with a pass from Jason Phillips. Oshawa came back to tie it up. Jason Phillips put Port ahead in the 3rd period with a pass from Bret Lawson. Oshawa again tied it up and put the game into overtime. Playing short handed, Mike Labanovich made a great check at Port's blue line and with speed and great stick handl- ing took it all the way up and in the net with a grand finale. Bret Lawson played an outstanding game on defense with many great checks, both body and stick. Congratulations Bret for a well play of their own. Obviously, everyone played well in a penal- ty killing role, but Sean Ellis was outstanding as he scored 2 shor- thanded goals as well as assisting on an early goal by Craig Laird. Craig assisted on one of Sean's markers and Jay Tredway chip- ped in with 2 hard earned assists. Jay turned in a strong two-way ef- fort, taking a lot of abuse in front of the Lindsay net. Scott Heasman made the touch transition from defence to right wing admirably, setting up Chad Kearns for the fourth Port goal, then scoring a power play counter prevail deserved MVP. Port's goaltending was an asset to the team during the tourna- ment. James Paterson and Scot Prechitko did an outstanding job making many breathtaking and key saves. With less th a win and a tie _ preserve the tie in a game they richly deserved to win. The improved play will be welcome, as they travel to Thorold for an A tournament next weekend. Curling Corner by Scott Howey Welcome back to another season of curling, and the Curling Corner. League curling got under-way last week with Mens on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday even- ings; Business Girls Tuesday evening; Mixed Friday evening; Ladies Monday and Tuesday afternoons; Thursday afternoon League; and Juniors daily after school. Steve Foster's and Scott Howey's teams curl Wednesday nights in a competition league held at the Oshawa Curling Club. A total of eight teams are entered in this league with the winner ad- vancing to the Provincial Final in Sudbury. The Ramada Challenge, a new Ontario Curling Association event, was held Saturday and- Sunday, Nov. 4-5 at the Uxbridge Curling Club. This event is for men's non-competitive league winners from last year. Each club within our zone has one entry. Representing Port Perry was the team of Ralph Fairman, Roger Moase, Phil Curtis, Tom Finner- ty. The team won their first game but chopped the next two which eliminated from the double knockout competition.
