Students return to classes byJulia Ashton After 28 days, Ontario's 9,000 striking community college teachers returned to the class- rooms Thursday. And according to one teacher, so have many of the 110,000 full time students. Ginny Colling, an applied arts teacher at Durham Col- lege, said most of the students in her classes had returned to school on Thursday and Friday. After such a lengthy strike, management and teachers feared students would become discouraged with the college system and drop out of their courses. "Things have been pretty good in my classes," Ms. Colling said. "It is hard to tell yet" how many students will not return. She said the teachers will have a better estimate after they tele- phone students that have not returned and find out their in- tentions. Some, she said, simply do not realize the strike is over. "I've heard rumors that one student called from Florida to find out if classes had started again," she said. Students at Durham College returned Thursday morning for an orientation program. Ms. Colling said the program was similar to the first day of classes in September. A new schedule has been set up to help recover the 20 lost school days, Ms. Colling said. Students will lose one week of their Christmas holidays, their entire reading week in Febru- ary, and the school year will be extended one week at the end of the year. A professional devel- opment day slated for Friday and an open house have been cancelled. "Under the new schedule, students will only miss about two to three school days," Ms. Colling said. "We understand that the changes are going to mean diffi- culties for students that have booked flights home for Christ- mas or have planned a holiday for reading week." "The teachers have been asked to be flexible and want to be flexible to help the students," she said. Dick Snowden, director of , student services at Durham College told the Star he is not sure if government-funded as- sistance will be increased for students having difficulties budgeting their money. "We just had a meeting today (Monday)," he said. "We're hop- ing to hear back from the gov- ernment today, but we don't know what their policy is right now." As for Ms. Colling, she said she is "relieved and delighted" to be back to work even though = Fa Celebrates 80 Years a settlement has not been reached. She said a new mediator, Martin Teplitsky, has been ap- pointed to replace Terry Manci- ni. If the managing Council of Regents and the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OP- SEU) cannot reach a settlement by Nov. 30, Mr. Teplitsky will "change hats" and become the arbitrator. He will then deter- mine what he believes to be a fair settlement and close the deal. r The union has decreased it's wage demand from 10 per cent over three installments for a one year contract. OPSEU is now asking for four per cent, two times a year, for a two year contract, Ms. Colling said. The teachers are also asking for retention of their sick leave plan and job security.
