Team gearing up for Saturday night showdown with Eagles MoJacks take 2 from Merchants The Port Perry ModJacks kept within striking distance of league-leading Bowmanville Eagles with three solid wins last week. The ModJacks pushed their record to 11 wins, one tie and three losses (23 points) but still trail the Eagles by three. The stage is set for a Satur- day night showdown as the Mo- Jacks will host the Eagles at the Scugog Arena. It's the proverbial "four- pointer" for both clubs and for the ModJacks, they will be seek- ing a little extra revenge for the 8-2 thumping they took in Bow- manville on Halloween Night. Bot the Eagles and the Mo- Jacks have been red hot lately with the ModJacks on a four game winning streak. The Ea- gles are the highest scoring team in the Central Loop and last Saturday evening they pinned .a 22-4 loss on last place Lakefield. That's not a football score, folks. On November 13, the Mo- Jacks went into Cobo and played very well to come home with an 8-2 victory. They followed that up with back-to-back weekend wins over the Little Britain Mer- chants, 5-3 Saturday night on the road and then 7-4 the next night at the Scugog Arena. Four power play goals by the MoJacks made the differ- encein Little Britan. John Harman hit for the hat trick, along with two as- sists, with singles to Chris Ares- enault and Warren Geer. Brad Menzies had three as- sists and John Lally a pair in this victory. Matt Durward paced the Merchants with two goals. It was much the same story when the two teams hooked up Sunday night at the Scugog Arena in a fast-paced, hard hit- ting game with the MoJacks comingouton top 7-4. The MoJacks jumped into an early 2-0 lead in the first as with Menzies and Kevin Gibson finding the back of the net be- fore two minutes had béen played. Gibson made it 3-0 early in the second on a bang-bang play as he took a centering pass from Rob Willett and slammed the puck home before Merchant net-minder Rick McGill could .- move. A couple of minutes later Len Giacalone gave the Mo- Jacks what appeared to be a comfortable 4-0 as he tipped in a puck that was straddling the goal line. But the Merchants were far from dead and they hit for a couple of quick ones of their own as Wade Finlay and Greg Cor- neil pulled the trigger to make the score 4-2. Warren Geer broke their hearts at 8:56 as he fired a puck from the line that fooled McGill completely as it seemed to drop in mid-air. Finlay made it 5-3 off a scramble and then Rob Willett scored on the power play late in Darren Lee and Len Giacalone of the MoJacks battle for loose puck in front of Little Britain netminder Rick McGill during Junior C action Sunday in Port Perry. The MoJacks completed a two game sweep over the Merchants to run their winning streak to four games. This Friday night the Mo- the period to give the MoJacks the three goal margin once again. The Merchants tried to get back into things in the third as Finlay got his hat trick with a perfect shot off the post at 7:01, only to have John Lally cement the win at the mid-point with assists from Paul Wilkins and Brad Menzies. It was Lally's third point of the game, and he has been collecting a lot of points for the MoJacks in recent outings. Todd Taylor picked up two assists on Sunday, which may have eased the pain somewhat. He took four stitches in the fore- head and had a couple of teeth . broken Saturday night in Brit- ain'when cross checked into the boards. The game was closer than the final score as the MoJacks fired 31 shots on net, while Brad Bricknell faced 30 in the Port Perry cage. He was very sharp in the first period, making sev- eral tough stops when the Mo- Jacks were killing a string of minor penalties. Over the last several years, the Cobourg Arena has not been a friendly place for the Mo- Jacks. In fact, victories have been few and very far between. But team officials had wide smiles on their faces after the game November 13 as the Mo- Jacks played near flawless hockey and came home with an 8-2 victory. Assistant coach Garnet Warriner said that was the fin- est effort the team has put out this season, and when the Star asked general manager Murray Parliament for the official game sheet to prepare this report, he quipped "Nope, I'm having it framed." The 8-2 win over the Cou- gers of Cobourg came just 24 hours after the MoJacks had put on an outstanding show at home against the Ajax Axemen that resulted in a 9-3 victory. The ModJacks were solid from start to finish as they opened a 2-0 lead in the first, "upped it to 4-1 after forty min- utes, then added four more in the final frame. Captain Brad Menzies had a big game with two goals and two assists, and John Lally clicked for a goal and two help- ers. Other marksmen for the MoJacks were Darren Lee, Todd Taylor, Jim Vernon, Paul Wilkirs and Len Giacalone. Defensemen Chris Arse- nault and Steve Connors each gathered two assists in this one. The MoJacks took full ad- vantage of Cobourg penalties with four power play goals, as the Cougers took 14 minors to Jacks hit the road for Lakefield to do battle with the Chiefs and on Saturday evening at the Scugog Arena, league- leading Bowmanville Eagles are In town to rheet the Mo- Jacks in what is a "four pointer" for both clubs. (see story for all the details) ten for the MoJacks. Team officials had a lot of praise for the control and disci- pline the Players displayed to stay away from the penalty box. Brad Bricknell faced 31 shots in the MoJack net to get another victory under his belt. The MoJacks made the most of their scoring chances as they had just 27 shots on Couger net- minder Jason Riehl. SLAPSHOTS: The ModJacks have signed Markahm net- minder Tony Sortino. The 18- year old played last season with Markham Junior Bs and was with the same club until a week or 8o ago, when he got caught in the goaltenders numbers game. Sortino was in net for the game Saturday in Little Britain and turned in a solid effort in his first outing in a MoJack sweater. With Dwayne Mackie on the injury shelf since almost the start of the season, Brick- nell has been holding down the fort for the team in the nets (and doing a good job) The signing of Sortino will give Bricknell some games off. Mackie has knee problems, and it's not known when he'll get back in the lineup. If he does, the coaching staff will have a tough decision to make. Veteran defenseman Chris Edmonson missed the weekend games with a gimpy knee, but should be back in the lineup by Friday when the MoJacks trav- el to Lakefield. Bill Lawrensen is still out with elbow problems. Aside from two games (6-5 ~ loss to Lakefield and an 8-2 loss to Bowmanville) the MoJacks have played very well defen- sively so far this season, giving up 62 goalsin 156 games. Game time Saturday night for the showdown with the Ea- gles is set for 8:00 PM at the Scugog Arena. Though the Jun- ior C season is still young, this is-a crucial game and it should - be a dandy. : It's also Minor Hockey Night and any PPMH player wearing a team sweater gets into the game gratis.
