Port Perry's first victory of the weekend was a regular league game against visiting Stouffville. Having suffered a loss to Stouff- ville the previous week, the Green Machine was out to prove they . were a force to be reckoned with. Some accounts from the stands reported this match-up as being one of the most exciting and some of the best Atom level hockey they had seen. Port Perry scoring started off in the first period on a goal by Brad Shanby from Kent Johnston and Brad Morton. The second, and winning goal, was scored by Kent Johnston assisted by Tim Fitzpatrick. Jeff Clark ended the scoring with an empty net goal in the final seconds to give Port a 3-1 victory. : Mariposa nips Port Juniors On Sunday Nov. 19, the Port Perry 1.G.A. After a scoreless first period, played mostly at center ice, Port broke it open in the se- cond period on a power play goal by Tom Chambers. Before the period finished, the line of Chambers, McEnaney and Gray had netted three goals. Kent Johnston gave Port a four goal edge early in the third. Millbrook finally found the mark and retaliated with two quick goals to put themselves back into the game until Daryl McEnaney finally put the game out of reach. Scoring in this 5-3 victory came from Tom Chambers 2 goals, 1 assist, Kevin Gray 1 goal, 3 assists, Daryl McEnaney 1 goal, 2 assists, Kent Johnston 1 goal, Tim Fitzpatrick 3 assists. Tom Chambers received the game MVP award. The championship round semi- final game was against an even- ly matched team from Keswick. Port's defensive unit of Jason Logan, Jeff Clarke, Rob Murphy and Mike Heasman, coupled with the efforts of Jamie Reid in goal, fended off a number of Keswick power play attempts to keep the opposition scoreless throughout the game. Port's offensive lines however were also kept scoreless. In the opening minutes of sud- den death overtime, Daryl McEnaney tipped Darryl Moase's shot from the blue line behind the Keswick goaltender to move Port on to the championship final. MVP for this game was Tim Fitz- patrick, and, special mention should go to his line mates Todd Parry and Darryl Moase for their strong two-way play. In the championship final, the Malmont Farm team were pitted against the home town favourites and tournament hosts. The strong play by the Gravenhurst team and aggressive forechecking prevented Port's offense from generating any real threat for the tournament title. In spite of the 5-0 final, both Jamie Reid and Dar- ryl Holtby played solidly in net making many spectacular saves. - Jeff Clarke received the MVP honors in this game. PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 21, 1989 -- 23 Burnett will coach Thunder Port Perry native George Burnett has been named head coach of the Niagara Falls Thunder of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Burnett accepted the posi- tion last week and in doing so, resigned Thursday as assistant coach with the Oshawa Gener- als, a position he held since just last August. The head coaching spot "with the Thunder became avail- able when former coach Bill La- Forge was released by Thunder owner and Oshawa business man Rick Gay. The Thunder was off to a very slowstart in the Emms Di- vision of the OHL with a record of four wins, fourteen losses and two draws, in last place but just a point behind Windsor. One area that obviously will be getting a lot of attention from Burnett is defense, as the Thunder had surrendered 128 goals in 20 games, the highest in the OHL. : The Generals, by contrast, were off to a hot start in the League's Leyden Division with a 14-3-2 record, just gne point out of the first place, but with four games 'in hand on Division leading Kingston. A Generals team spokes- man told the Star Friday the Club is "sorry for selfish reasons to see George depart, but we are all pleased for his sake that he has the chance to work as a "ment was head coach in this league." Following a press confer- ence last Thursday evening in Oshawa at which the announce- made, Burnett jumped in his car and drove to Peterborough as the Thunder played the Petes, and went down to defeat 8-2. Burnett played his Minor Hockey in Port Perry, spent two seasons in Newmarket, then three with the London Knights of the OHL before taking his university degree at McGill where he was a mainstay of the Redmen hockey team for three seasons. He began coaching with Uxbridge Bruins of the Central Junior C League, then spent two seasons as head coach of the Port Perry MoJacks and skip- pered the team in 1987-88 to its first ever berth in the all- Ontario Junior C championship series, Last season, he coached the Seneca Braves of the Ontario College League. Meanwhile, the Thunder last Friday secured the services of Pandy Hall to work as assist- ant. Hall had been coaching the Lindsay Junior B team thissea- son.
