24 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 21, 1989 Tough loss for PPHS Juniors at LOSSA Port Perry High School's Junior girl's basketball team went down to defeat in the LOSkA semi-finals on Thurs- ay. The junior team came up nent in against a tough op $oh Sc lin the .L.. Roberts Hi semi-final match. The game between these two schools, was a battle every step of the way, as each team fought for every point. The Port Perry girls kept the score to a close margin, with the score at half-time showing Roberts 20 and Port 17. The Roberts team came out ' Port Perry High School Junior Girl's basketball team, lost a close semk-final LOSSA match to G.L. Roberts High School. Port was leading at the third quarter mark, but could not hold onto thelr three point lead., and came out on the losing end of a 40-34 decision. Port held Roberts at 26 points, while they netted four baskets, to bring them back within 3 points. The girls continued to score in convincing fashion as they rallied to come out on top 31-28 at the end of the third quarter. Both teams played a very de- fensive, and offensive game, but precise foul shooting helped clinch the win for the Roberts team. The final quarter was fast- paced, as the play quickly went from end to end. The juniors ef- forts were to no avail as the Roberts team came out on top, after a hard fought match with a score of 40-34. Top scorers for the juniors were Gretchen Cornish with 16 points, and Vanessa Gibson with 8. Juveniles romp On Thursday November 16, Woodville came to Port Perry to play the "Key-Bar" Juveniles, ex- cept they forgot to bring three quarters of their team. With only 5 skaters and 2 goalies Woodville was in trouble in a 15-1 whitewash from Port. In the first period Port laid back and let the oppostion handle the puck for awhile as they didn't get to do that too much in the second or third. Port closed the first with a 2-0-lead on goals from Jason ° Wienhold and Jamie Menzies with assists going to Darren Stitt, Mark Barkey, and Andrew Steele. Just :13 seconds into the second period, Mike Sorley put Port up 3-0 on passes from Bob Fielding and Jason Wienhold. Just over a minute later Woodville, 'oops 'Mud Ville', got their first and last goal of the night. Port then rallied for seven goals to end the period with a 10-1 lead. Scoring for Port in the second were as follows: Jamie Menzies 2 goals, 1 assist, Bob Fielding 2 goals, Jerry Douma 1 goal, 3 assists, Mark Barkey 1 goal, 2 assists, Jason Wienhold 1 goal, 1 assist, Darren Stitt 2 assists, Mike Sorley, Mark Elliott, and Paul Allen each with one assist. The third period wasn't much different than the second as Port scored 5.more times to make the final score 15-1. In the second period Jamie Menzies scored twice to earn his hat trick and Bob Fielding got his with the last goal of the game just :31 seconds left. Again, scoring in the third went as follows: Darren Stitt, Jerry Douma, Andrew Steele, and Bob Fielding each had 1 goal, 1 assist, Mike Gibson 1 goal, Jamie Men- zies 2 assists, Mark Barkey and Jason Wienhold each with 1 assist.
