The boys skated out on the ice with only 10 players, but still managed to out play their opponents to win 7-1. Ryan Picard led the way with a hat trick while also picking up an assist:.. Sean McEnaney also had a big night scoring once and assisting on 4 others while Todd Smart was not far behind scoring once and adding 3 assists. Steve Desautels and Scott Wylie finish- ed off the scoring for Port with 1 goal a piece. Chad Garvock, Aron Royle, Peter King and Lindsay Parry all picked up 1 assist. Adam Heyes was sharp between the pipes stopping almost everything that came his way in his best game of the year. On Wednesday night the boys hosted the tough Manvers team and squeaked out a 6-5 win. Once again Sportsland had only 10 players and the effects showed in this game as they had leads of 4-1 and 5-2 that they let slip away. Chad Garvock and Sean McEnaney each scored 2 goals, with Todd Smart and Peter King each adding one. Jeff Card, Scott Wylie and Todd Smart all picked up 2 assists with Steve Desautels and Sean McEnaney adding one each. Despite the let down in the last half of this game the team show- ed signs of turning things around as they are finally beginning to play the style that the coaching staff expects of them. On Saturday night the team travelled to Millbrook to face their strong club. Unfortunately the boys seemed. they would rather be doing something else than play hockey as they put forth a very lackluster effort in losing 8-0. On Sunday Sportsland travell- ed to Uxbridge and although their effort was not much better than the previous night they still managed to come home with a 44 tie. Jeff Card got Port started con- necting on a nice pass from Chad Garvock, Lindsay Parry also picked up an assist. Uxbridge tied the game but Todd Smart restored the lead 3. Early in the third period, Lind- say Parry made the score 4-2 Petites strike for deflecting Aron Royles shot from the point, Todd Smart also helped out on this one. Port then went in- to a shell and allowed Uxbridge to score 2 unanswered goals to tie the game. The next home game for the Sportsland Bantams is Wednes- day night at 7:40 against Omemee. Hope to see you there. the gold medals On Saturday morning, the Bruton's I.D.A. Petites travelled to Stayner to participate in their first tournament of the year. With the exception of six excellent se- cond year players, the majority of this team is young and inex- perienced at the Petite level. However, on Sunday afternoon, they started their homeward trip with smiles on their faces and trophies in their hands. Port Perry had come out on top for the second year in a row. Coach Har- ris and Coach Payne, assisted by Doug Anderson, have done wonders in such a short time, molding sixteen individual girls into a real team. Thanks also to the managers, Melody Moase and Debbie Storms, for their work in making the necessary ar- rangements for the trip, and car- ing for the girls on the bench. In Game 1, Port Perry met a good team from Richmond Hill whom they would meet again in the tournament final. While Port won this game on 3 goals - 2 by Brandy Harris and 1 by Lynda Payne, it was our defence that did the hard work. Melissa Dawson, a first year player is improving with each game she plays and showed us some new moves that she is trying out. Melissa Pereman and Jenny Storms (who got 1 assist) were steady as usual. While we were short handed late in the second period, Katie Senyk, in goal for this game, had to make several key saves in order to preserve the shutout. The final score was 3-0 for Port Perry. [od unusual Ringette team from Oro - there were more boys than girls in the line-up. This didn't scare our Petites as they proceeded to win by a score of 13-0. Katie once again got a shutout but it hardly counts because she did not face even one shot on goal. Scoring for Port were Brandy: 3 goals, Shona Moase 3 goals, Cara Vander Slagt: 2 goals and 2 assists, Cin- day Verschuuren: 2 goals and 1 assist, Melissa Pereman: 1 goal and 2 assists, Joan Anderson: 1 goal and 1 assist, Mandy Smart: 1 goal and 3 goal posts, Dana Hooker: 4 assists, Natasha Burgess: 3 assists, Jenny Storms: 2 assists, and Lynda: 1 assist. The coach's strategy during this game gave many of the girls a chance to play different positions. Joan, Lynda and Shona really showed their talent and experience as they played equally well no mat- ter where they were sent. A 10-3 score for Port in the 3rd game against Stayner does not in- dicate the hard work cut out for the goalie, Shona. Several of the players had an extremely hard shot, and were it not for Shona's quick reflexes, the score would be quite different. Netting points were Brandy: 3 goals, Dana: 2 goals and 1 assist, Jenny: 2 goals, Lynda: 1 goal and 1 assist, Cara: 1goal and 1 assist, Mandy: 1 goal, Joan: 1 goal, Cindy: 1 assist. While Natasha did not score in this game, it was not for lack of trying as she took more shots on net than we could count. Michelle Branton also was a definite part- of the play-making although she did not show up on the score sheet. After 3 exciting but tiring games, the girls went back to their motel in Collingwood for a well-earned swim, and time to contemplate the big game that was to take place on Sunday against the other finalist - Rich- mond Hill. Katie was in goal for the final and had her work cut out for her as a quick shot, 15 seconds into the game, caught our defence off guard and slid into the net. It was a fast-paced game using the whole ice surface as the two teams traded goal for goal. On several occasions, the penalty killing skills of Melissa Pereman, Sheila Ranger, and Lea-anne Wakeford kept the ring out of the Port Perry end. Both Lea-anne and Sheila played one of their best games yet and contributed to the final outcome. Late in the second period, we ~ saw four full minutes of excellent passing, and strong defence from both teams. Cindy on the forward line, and Jenny on the defence really stood out. However, it was Brandy who stole the show as the team relied on her to score 6 of the 7 Port goals, with Mandy scoring the other. Cara and Dan both made 3 assists, Shona 2 assists, and Melissa Dawson 1 assist. The final score was 7-4, and the Tour- nament Gold went to Port Perry Petites.
