Open until 10:00 P.M. - FRIDAY & SATURDAY ht --------t oo Yeo RS t THe YMCA to shut Port Perry day care in six weeks By Kelly Storry As of January 1, "1890 the Port Perry Junior Y will no longer be providing licensed daycare. though the Junior Y will no longer provide this service, it will continue to expand recrea- tional and enrichment - ams for children and their amilies. Agording » Connie Ste- phenson, enrichment co-ordinator, the ny "of the community have changed. There is no need for the Y to of- fer daycare, as this need is be- ing met elsewhere. "The daycare needs of Port Perry are being met through S.A. Cawker, and Stonemoor, the YMCA must reflect that change," Stephenson said. Although there is a problem in Durham Region of long wait- ing lists for daycare facilities, Port Perry does not seem to be feeling this crunch. Recent numbers suggest there are 216 children on waiting lists for pri- vate centres, which are under contract with the region, and 52 on the waiting list for regional centres. This is not to mention the reported 482 children that are on waiting lists for day care in private homes, which is the most popular form of regional daycare. Janice Griffith, general man- ager of YMCA, Durham Re- gion, suggests that the YMCA is not changing, just what it is doing with the building is. "The need now is no longer daycare. We want to fill the rec- reation end. Now we have the opportunity to Soi things into place, we couldn't do before," Mrs. Griffith said. The intent of the new pro- gramming will be recreational. There will be morning, after- noon, and evening times avail- able at the Y for people of all ages. The Y has gotten in ut from the community, and decided on computer oe kid's club after school, arts and crafts, and games for the school aged, 'and a babysitters train- ing course for ages 12 and up to name some of the activities be- ing considered. Mrs. Griffith also states there will be a play school, twice a week, for two hours a day. "There were very few chil- dren here that were full time daycare, and we found that Stonemoor, and SchoolHouse Playcare(S.A. Cawker), could accomodate those who were," she said. She continued by saying that the daycare staff at the Junior Y has been working with each family to help in paving the "away. To take care of people in the transition. The YMCA is looking at this change as a positive thing. The Y has started many things such front-runnerin. "The Y has always been anin- novator for many things," she said. "When the YMCA does see a need it gets involved. If it(the Y) sees it is being satisfied else- where, it tends to pull back, and The GATE FAMILY RESTAUARANT & TAVERN.
