Week aimed at changing attitudes Here is a summary of the special events planned to draw public attention to this year's Recycling Week theme "Chang- ing Attitudes-Reduce, Reuse, Recycle." Women's Institute members will have displays on recycling at Scugog Memorial Library and Community Memorial Hospital. Pine Ridge Garden Club will be in charge of, a display at the Scugog Township Office, and Myers Cash and Carry Bulk Foods Store will host a display as well. Come and learn more about current ways of dealing with gar- bage and how individuals can become involved in decision- making about it at the Scugog Library on Tuesday evening, 7 November 21 at 7:15 p.m. The film '""The Sound of the Stream" - will be shown and discussion will take place over coffee afterward. '"'Recycle" a used toy that is clean and in good condition by dropping it off at the Toy Lending Library on Thursday, November 23 at the United Church between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. Keep in mind that in addition to recycling, reduction and reuse are also important components of the new "3 R's." Environment Minister Jim Bradley has established targets of 25 percent waste reduction by 1994 and 50 percent by the year 2000. If we are to meet these targets, we will all have to get serious about the 3 R's. With industry and commer- LE > Water St. Port Perry 983-900 sas cial operations producing an estimated 60 percent or more (or approximately 5 million tonnes) of the waste going to Ontario land- fill sites every year, businesses must devote extra energy to the waste reduction issue as well. Let's all take advantage of Recycling Week to put our heads together and come up with new ideas of how we can all stop being part of the problem, 'and start "becoming part of the solution! If you have comments or ques- tions about Recycling Week, or would like to receive more infor- mation about waste reduction in general and recycling in par- ticular, contact Recycling Week coordinator, Janet Banting at 985-3225.
