4 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 21, 1989 Arena Board rejects bid for liquor permit By Kelly Storry A bid for a liquor license for a January tournament by the Port Perry Broomball Associa- tion was turned down by the Scugog Arena Board. The Port Perry Broomball Association sent a request through the Township Council that it wished to sell liquor at an upcoming tournament in January. According to Glenn McCoy, chairman of the Arena Board, the Board did not see it as a policy it wished to start up. Yvonne Christie, regional councillor, said the request came through to council, and the council did not like it, but sent it to the Arena Board. The board has the control over rent- ing of the ice, and the activities that go on in the arena. Both Council, and the arena board were in opposition to the re- quest. "I didn't see it as a matter of policy. It is the thin edge of a wedge, to give the go ahead to the Broomball sociation. What answer would I give to other groups that wanted the same consideration," Mr. McCoy said. He continued by saying that iftheBoard allowed this license it would have to give everyone the right to liquor in the stands. 'What the broomball repre- sentatives wanted was permis- sion to sell liquor in two of the dressing rooms, and section off the stands to allow players to drink while watching the games. The broomball tournament in Port Perry is 24 hours, the games begin Friday at 11 p.m,,.__ / | and continue until Saturday at.. 12 ah. fore obtaining a liquor li- cense there are several groups that must be informed. The Broomball Association sent let-. - ters to the fire, police, and health departments, and re- ceived back three letters that. stated none saw a problem with, the tournament having liquor. The Arena Board and local Council saw differently. : Prior to this year, tourna- ments Port Perry has hosted: have been held at Manvers are- na, "If the tournament is held in Port Perry there is better re- sponse from teams. When Port Perry is hosting a tournament, teams would prefer to come to Port Perry, than Manvers," Mr. Woodrow said. 3 Manvers arena has a ban- quet hall, where liquor could be bought and sold during the ame. Last year there was a $600 profit from the Manver's tournament, because of the bar. He stated that it looks like Broomball Association could lose $700 without liquor being soldin the arena." The alternative plan for the broomball association is to rent a facility away from the arena where players and spectators could gofor a drink. "It looks like we could lose $700 unless there is a good turn-out at the bar. We may do alright, the bar may do better than we think it will," he said. Mr. Woodrow is not going to argue the decision by the Arena Board. "I am just glad to see the tour- nament back in Port Perry., and want to continue to have it here. If the liquor license was okayed that would have been great, but if it wasn't, that is okay as well," he said. NEED PHOTOCOPIES? We can do them for you! Letter, Legal & Ledger. Reduced & Enlarged.
