28 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 28, 1989 Pee Wees contend with snow and Orono On a snowy Monday the Port Pee Wee 2's travelled to Orono and were defeated by a score of 4-3. The boys were up for this one and could have easily won it but Orono came through in the last two minutes, robbing us of victory. Orono was ahead 2-0 when Jason Reid carried the puck from the blue line and got a good pass to Brent Harper who shot it in. Early in the third Orono got a power play goal and that seemed to be all our guys needed. Deter- mination set in and we scored 2 quick goals to tie the game up. The first came on a brilliant twirl around shot from Daryl Bourgeois after some fine passing from Matt Hobbs and Sandy Mark. The tieing goal came from same line only Daryl and Matt did the passing and the honours went to Sandy Mark. Port's 2 losses on Saturday were to the host team from Haliburton and the team from Lakefield by indentical scores of 7-0. "Game Star" trophies were given to each team after the game. Matt Phillips scored Port's last goal unassisted. Paul Shrigley earned his second shutout between the pipes. "Game Star" of t me went to our newest men.ver of the team Andrew Jones. Port played ther final game against Bancroft and lost by a score of 4-2. Mike Labanovich got our first goal when he got his own rebound and shot it in. Sandy Mark got our last goal on a wicked shot to the top of the net after a good pass from Rick Injuries The news was good and bad for the Legionaires in Stouffville Wednesday night, as they won the game but lost some players to injuries. With Jay Tredway leading the hit parade and Joe Broadworth scoring a pair of goals, Port outhustled and outmuscled the Clippers. On the down side, Neil Mueller reinjured his broken foot after a strong performance in his first game back; and Craig Laird, who leads the team in assists, suf- fered a broken wrist which will .put him on the shelf for a least a month. After a scoreless first period, the Clippers opened the scoring on a blue line blast moments after Mike Pashley had made a tough shoulder stop on an equally potent shot. Halfway through the period some excellent forechecking by Jay T. and Chad Kearns set up Joe to tie the score on a sharp backhander from the faceoff circle. Early in the third, Sean Ellis made one of his spectacular solo rushes to put Port up 2-1. Kenton LeFort, who played possibly his best game in a Legion uniform assisted on the goal. Stouffville tied the score with less than 4 minutes to play, but Port refused to fold. Jeremy Norton sent Sean away again---and after some furious action around the crease Joe potted his second with 43 seconds left to give Port a 3-2 win, - their first of the season against any of the league's "contenders." "Game Star" of this game was a very well deserving Mike Labanovich. All boys should be commended for their efforts shown this weekend as they faced teams higher than their calibre. Skate with your heads held high boys - you made your parents proud. Port now plays in the Omemee tournament this Saturday. Good luck guys. hurt On the weekend Port ran into some good competition in a tough division at Haliburton. The effects of a lot of hockey with a lack of manpower over the last couple of weeks seemed to contribute as well, as the Legionaires dropped three games. Against Gravenhurst early Saturday morning, Port did outplay the team but lost 6-2 to Gary Sontag as the powerhouse scored 4 goals and set up the other 2. Kenton LeFort, among others, played a strong game, scored both Port goals and was named MVP. Jay Tredway and Sean Ellis assisted on the first, other assists are not available. In the afternoon, a game that Port again held an edge in play resulted in a 3-1 loss to Bracebridge. Sean supplied an early lead, assisted by Jay T.. After tieing the score in the se- cond, Bracebridge went ahead with just over 3 minutes to play; then iced it with an empty netter. Sean picked up the MVP in this game. The:last game was against league rival Stouffville. Again the Sean-Jay T. combo provided an early lead for the good guys. The size and shooting ability of the Clippers slowly wore Port down and eventually carried them toa 6-1 victory. Jay T. was awared MVP for the game. The Legionaires will continue to be busy as they travel to Cobourg "Tuesday night and entertain Lind- say on Friday at 9:15. ™ GUARANTEED CLEANING SERVICES 416-985-3869 SEAGRAVE = ONTARIO - L0C 1GO
