Cornish for UNICEF Unicef will be the recipient of $1,408 from R.H. Cornish pu lic school students. : The students raised the mon- ey in classroom collections, through the unicef boxes worn on Halloween, and some par- ents donated to the cause as well. Notes were sent home to the parents, to ask that their chil- dren each donate a quarter from their piggy bank, and par- ents if they wish could give Loonies($1 coins) as well. Stan Todd, principal of R.H. Cornish stated he is very proud of his students enthusiasm, and the fact that many classes had 100% participation. _ Mr. Todd also stated that he is very happy about the amount collected as it is two times more than the school has every col- lected in any one year. What makes this total even more im- . A pessive is that the student pop- ulation has declined by over 300 students, with the S.A. Cawker Public School being built this year. Last year R.H. Cornish had an enrolment fig- ure of over 1,100 students, com- pared to the current 830 chil- n. Prizes were also donated to the school to be received by the classes with the highest partici- pation figure, and the classes that raised the most money. 1 Yi" PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 28, 1989 -- 33 { Iseler Singers af Town Hall Music critic Joan Bradley of Prince George, B.C., began her review with the question "How does one praise perfection?" How indeed, when one is writing about the world-renowned Elmer Iseler Singers! This group of twenty profes- sional musicians, the core of Iseler's famous Mendelssohn Choir (of which Port Perry's Catherine Millar is a member), made its debut in 1979 and soon leaped to international pro- minence. Under the vibrant leadership of Canada's pre- eminent choral conductor, Dr. Elmer Iseler, the Singers' reper- toire spans 500 years of choral music. Impeccable in quality of sound, diction, tonal balance and musicianship as well as skilled in languages, styles, dynamics and articulation, the group is con- sistently invited to make ap- pearances throughout Canada, the U.S. and Europe. Based in Toronto, the Iseler Singers are frequently involved in radio and television broadcasts and a wide variety of recording projects. They regularly commis- sion and perform new works and are highly valued for their con- tributions to workshops and master classes. Winners of the Grand Prix du Disque (Canada) for "Welcome Yule" in 1988 and Juno nominees for their album "Serenade in Harmony,' the choir also recorded the sound- track for Norman Jewson's film "Agnes of God." The Singers' Festival ap- pearances include the Canada in Holland Festival, Expo '86, the Calgary Olympics, the First World Symposium on Choral Music presented in Vienna in '87, the Seoul Olympics Festival in '88 on their Asian tour, and perfor- mances at the International Choral Festival in Toronto. As for the maestro, Elmer Iseler himself, he has been variously described by critics and admirers alike as 'having the eternal inability to be dull," as "articulate, charismatic, meticulous, buoyant, upbeat," "the man with the incredible ear," a musical facsimile of Ben- jamin Franklin who conducts with authority a splendid choir which is equally at home with classic or contemporary choral works. And as a trademark, the maestro always highlights moderns in his varied and ex- citing programmes. Away from the baton, Dr. Iseler even manages to find time to pur- sue his hobbies; he is an avid fisherman, and accomplished photographer, astronomer and gardener. Port Perry is privileged to have these versatile musicians appear at Town Hall 1873 in the special concert series Christmas presen- tation 'Welcome Yule!" on Satur- day, December 9 at 8 p.m. (Tickets $15.00 at Irwin Smith Music). Dr. Iseler and his 20-voice choir will demonstrate with virtuosity what choral perfection means in their diversified seasonal salute to "Welcome Yule!" From tradi- tional Christmas Music by Bach, old favorite carols and spirituals (one an emotive tenor solo by Robert Missen, "I Ain't Got Time to Die)"' some special Canadian Christmas carols and/or ar- rangements, to more contem- porary works such as Benjamin Britten's '"'Ceremony of Carols', Cape Breton's "Christmas Gift," and Choral arrangements by Vaughn Williams and Healey Willen, the Singers promise a joyous auditory feast for concert- goers. On December 9th, come to Town Hall 1873, Queen St., and "Welcome Yule!"
