Katie placed second in the province in the Annual Auto- motive Awareness Essay Con- test, which was co-sponsored by Tele-Direct Yellow Pages, and the automotive industry. The essay topic was to be "The one feature every car needs", and Katie decided that feature was an educated driver. The English Department at Port Perry High School, where Katie is a Grade 9 student, en- couraged the students to enter this contest to receive as many essays as possible. The result was 600 essays from Port Perry High School students. Each teacher chose the essay he/she felt was the best in that class, and in turn all the teach- ers voted on one essay to send to the contest. The essay was to be between 200-250 words, and was open to 2 Shudants in Grade 9 through The second place finish for Katie is even more of an achievement, as her essay was only one of a total of 14,356 that were judged. "I didn't think I would do that well, it still hasn't hit me. The feeling is great, but it does not seemreal yet," she said.
