New $50 bill easy fo verify A Canadian invention is chang- ing the face of paper money. Up until now, to verify a bill's authen- ticity required close inspection and some knowledge of printing and paper technology. The latest security device featured on the Bank of Canada's new $50 bills (introduced December 1) changes all -that. The optical security device (OSD) is a small square of film on the bill's face. When the OSD is tilted, the colour shifts between gold and een. This simple, reliable check allows anyone to quickly verify that the bill is authentic. The OSD is so advanced it would be pro- hibitively expensive to reproduce. It cannot be copied by photographic or printing technology. The development of the OSD follows research by the Bank of Canada, the National Research Council and a number of private sector companies. Under the Bank's leadership, researchers looked at a number of different security features, ranging from printing methods to the more sophisticated optical technology demonstrated by the OSD. Each device was subjected to a battery of tests. The "thin film" OSD survived the best and is now seen in the upper left corner of the new $50. To achieve its effect, the OSD has layers of ceramic material thinner than the wavelengths of light - less than one thousandth of a millimetre thick. Light comes in a range of wavelengths. As you tilt the OSD, you alter the wavelength and change its colour from green to gold. Since 1935, the Bank of Canada has incorporated design features in bank notes to ensure that Cana- dian currency is one of the most difficult to counterfeit. The Bank introduced the OSD to discourage counterfeiting as sophisticated printing technology becomes more widely available. With the introduction of a new series of bills in 1986, the Bank of Canada has changed the ap- pearance of the $2, $5 and $10 bills. These changes include: microprinting, fine-line patterns, and a rainbow of pastel colours that are difficult to reproduce, as well as the random distribution of "planchettes" - or green dots - on each bill. These security features wa also be used on the new $50 Canadian currency offers another advantage. It can be more confidently handled by the blind and visually impaired. For those with limited sight, the larger numerals can be more easily read. For the blind, electronic readers can read the print on the face and distinguish between dif- ferent denominations in the new series. Using voice technology, a portable device has been developed which "speaks" aloud the value of the bill. The portrait on the face of the bill is that of William Lyon McKenzie King, Canada's tenth Prime Minister. The new $50 bill illustrates the Snowy Owl, conti- nuing the recent practice of featuring birds on our currency. The bill will be deep red in colour. Existing $50 bills will continue in circulation until they are worn or soiled. They will then be replaced with the new series. The $50 bill has an average life span of three and a half years in cir- culation. There are more than 60 million $50 bills in use, with a face value of more than $3 billion, 3 EE SSIES a Zo ARN SANA Ried aaa To Res 8 ER TR A SR SR 8 \ QD Kh OW. = SE = SR &E PRINCE ALBERT UNITED CHURCH "Rev.
