| by Constance Mallory Many years ago, 1944 to be exact, when World War II was still raging in Europe, there came a phone call to my place of employment from my mother...my fiancee had been reported 'missing in action," presum- ed dead." On that fateful day, December 2, his family had received the telegram all parents of enlisted men and women had reason to dread. It took a few phon. calls to inform the other members of his family, who in turn, spread the bad news to friends. We could not settle down to just waiting for news. The next day we were determined to do something. We knew the names and addresses of his crew members that were flying with him in the Halifax Bomber air- craft, they also had been reported missing, and their parents were desperate for information as much as we were. We travelled many miles to their homes in an ef- fort to hear any scrap of news, such as, where were they when you last heard, what did he say in his last letter? All this, we knew was such a futile effort on our part, but we had to do something, doing something was bet- ter than doing nothing. It kept us from thinking of the My Most Memo PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 19, 1989 -- 19 OTR KY TR JR JOR YOK Th J JOS Nk YK 3. We drew strength from each other, and consola- tion came from knowing the strong character of my boyfriend, He would not give up, if he crash landed and survived he would 'make it back" if he possibly could. A week passed, we wrote to him as usual, knowing that back at the air base the first thing he would look for would be mail from home. Christmas had been forgotten, no shopping, no happy gatherings. The Christmas cake ingredients had been set aside on the kitchen counter ready for assembling and baking. Everyone was much too spiritless to enjoy the holidays. Many more phone calls were received from the other parents wondering had we heard any, more news. - Of course, no news is good news. We carried on with the kind and thoughtful support of his family, friends and my co-workers. Time went slowly, it seemed like a year had passed, it was only the second week. Then into the third week a cable had been sent to my home, as no one was in at the time, the delivery boy left a note to call C.P. Telegraph office. When I arrived home at 5 o'clock that evening I telephoned them, only to be told that they had no record of the cable and the RUT RUT RUT RUT RUT RUT RUT RTE RUT RUT JO RUST JR JU RUS R28 85% R78 RA RR ROE R28 Ra R528 RAR RAZR Ak Rash SR Ras RR RAZR RAR RAZ Sh Rk STR RAZR RN RAZR ST ROA R78 ROR RAZR RAZR RAT RATE RA RAR R75 RAR RAR RR RATA RUA RUT RUA RA RUA vA DELIGHT Cheesecakes, Specialty Desserts, Pies To place your orders call... I phoned my fiancee's parents, they had heard no news whatever and they had been home all day. It was not until 8 o'clock that even- ing we received the good news, "R265262 (his i.d. number) previously reported missing is now reported safe." ' On that date, December 18, I will never forget how we rejoiced. First, by thanking God for his miracle, all our prayers had been answered. Then we spread the good news to everyone through laughter and tears. The long forgotten Christmas cake was made that very evening, oh what fun we had. Regretfully, our gleeful spirits did not last very long. There were no other survivors of that plane crash. We were saddened to hear that the other six crew members perished. Confirmation of this tragic fact came to us shortly before Christmas. Very mixed emotions still fill my heart every year when I remember Christmas 1944 as my most memorable ever. : : !
