David Beesley BEWARE...SOMETHING NEW IS IN THE AIR! It is the season of song! It seems that the air is filled with the warm strains of familiar Christmas carols. These time-honoured musical expressions do more than just evoke sentimental Christmas emotions however. They serve to remind us of the fantastic story of Jesus' advent to earth at. Bethlehem. Christmas carols keep us in touch with truth! I believe there is an urgent need this Christmas to fill the air with the praises of God's son. I'm beginning to hear some bizaare musical sounds which are threatening to obscure the clear Biblical truth of the incarnation. Other sources are pro- ducing music that seek to undermine the central truth of the Christmas story. I'm thinking specifically of New Age music which is making a play for the ears and hearts of this generation. The emergence of New Age philosophy has spawned a whole new musical genre with a new gospel message. It is a bogus gospel which seeks to displace Jesus Christ from His unique role as earth's Saviour. In a recent major science magazine published for popula consumption a full-page ad appeared for a New Age Sound- track -- "Synchronicity." The ad reads like this: "The sound begins and a window opens...the boundaries of time and space disappear-...peace fills your heart and the experience of source awakens within you..." A toll free number is made available for those who desire a free sample tape. _ Clearly, New Age proponents are anxious this Christmas to place in the hands of listeners a medium to communicate a revolutioinary message. And what is that message? They are saying that you need to listen: -- not to music that exalts Jesus Christ as the unique, divine Son of God, but to music that exalts man to new consciousness of his innate divinity. -- not to music that speaks of man lost in sin and in need of redemption, but to music that denies the reality of human depravity and points to the unlimited evolutionary potential of man to create his own heaven on earth. -- not to music that speaks of the necessity of God's saving grace but to music that hearlds man's self-salvation, his own self-actualization. -- not to music that announces the arrival of the "Christ" on earth among men, but to music that encourages the discovery of the "Christ-consciousness' on earth with men. The New Age's subtle symphony is nothing more than a cacophony of confusion. It cannot meet the needs of people seeking for spiritual reality. We must continue to present the unchanging truth of God's coming to earth in Jesus as the answer to mankind's deepest needs and yearnings. Once again this Christmas, we must fill our lives with the heavenly sound of His story -- the story of Christ's redeem- ing love in coming to the manger in Bethlehem. Once again, our churches must hear of the Saviour's love as we echo the humble song of Mary: "My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour." Once again, our world must know of the angelic choir an- nouncing Jesus' advent to earth: "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill among men." So, this Christmas, let's make His praise glorious. Our 'singing is crucial in bringing to hearts and minds the majestic truth of our Eternal Creator and King who invaded our world as a helpless baby. ! The earth explodes with singing, There's music everywhere. = | And angels spill over heaven's edge, * Filling all the air. And cradled in the musty hay, Our God incarnate lay! .R. Huff Rev.
