EL -- by Hennie Povey Many people, when speaking of days gone by will tell you without hesitation, 'My mother was the Best in the World." . Iwas blessed to have one such Mother, for you see, my Mother was the Best in the World. She taught me the Golden Rule -- Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. She recited the Serenity Prayer -- God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. She told me it takes less energy to smile than it takes to frown and if you really want to share happiness, smile, lend a hand, and care. She explained to me how you can attract more flies with honey than with vinegar, and also showed me how to do a good deed for someone -and goodness will come to you ten fold over. When Mom was a reasonably spry 75 year young woman, she enjoyed fairly good health. It was always a game to her to get the jump on 'Christmas shoppers and have her shopping done by mid November. I'm sure it was her enthusiasm and excite- ment over this "special" time of year that made her family today do just a little extra to make Christmas "memorable." 2, : - At the time of this memorable Christmas, I had a Cornish kids tell would like to give to "mom" ON OURABLE Mx My Most Memorab IB good friend who found it very difficult to enjoy the Christmas festivities because she had lost both of her parents in a traffic accident a few years before at Christmas time. Although Mom had only known Helen for a couple of years, Helen held a very special place in my mother's heart. On November 28, Mom fell and broke her hip. She was rushed to the hospital and had emergency surgery that night. The operation was successful and Mom was put in traction. The doctors told us that she would probably be in the hospital for three months. They kept her sedated for the pain she was in. She was very drowsy many times as we visited. We thought it was best to allow only her family to visit until she was a little better. : days after her accident, she informed me that she had all of her Christmas shopping done -- all but one which she was very worried about. She hadn't got Helen, my friend, her present. She asked me to go and get Helen some nice slippers. I thought that there was a lot of time to get them as it was only the first week of December. I thought I was just too busy running to the hospital in Oshawa and taking care of my own family. Co For three days whenever Mom woke up and I was there, she would ask me "Did you get the slippers!" I RNTIO le Christmas told her "no, but I will when I get time." Mom in turn would get very upset. I finally realized that she would be more comfortable if I would just pick up the slippers, On December 5, I picked up the slippers and took them to the hospital to show her. She smiled at me with tears in her eyes. She only wanted me to do one more thing for her -- Would I bring Helen in to see her? On December 7, I took Helen in to see her. Mom held Helen's hand and talked to her about Christmas. When we were leaving, Mom was more her old self than she had been since the accident. On December 8, I went in to see Mom around lunch time. She was turned away from me resting. I took her arm and whispered "Mom." She turned her head to look at me. A smile crossed her face. She never spoke -- just held my hand. She went into a cardiac arrest and within half an hour, all was over. Her work was done. December 25 was filled with emotions for our fami- ly. For although Mom was gone, her presence was felt among us all. All of her children, daughter-in-law, and sons-in-law received a gift from Mom. All of her the box of chocolates for each family which she made a tradition, was there. My friend Helen not only received her slippers for a gift, but the love of a friend who cared and could not leave until her last job was completed. To My Mom -- "The Best Mom in the World," and "All of the other Best Mom's in the World" -- You are not forgotten -- Merry Christmas. I love you Mom, and thank you for my most memorable Christmas. I had searched everywhere for one like it. The diamonds sparkled in the dim light. I lifted the tag and it read: Now is your chance to buy this one of a kind necklace for only $100. I purchased it and started for home. I tripped over a large rock in the sidewalk and dropped the necklace down an open sewer hole! I jumped in right after it. I sear- ched for hours before I finally found it. I took it home and warp- ped it. My mom said that it was the best Christmas present that she ever got. : I was going to say: it was so Ho...
