PORT PERRY STAR -- Thursday, December 28, 1989 -- 15 ~~ Speeders will feel big hits in pocket-book Ontario Transportation Minister William Wrye has in- troduced amendments to the Highway Traffic Act which dramatically increase the fines for speeding infractions. "Thesé changes reflect our new, tough approach to drivers who deliberately endanger the lives of others by exceeding the posted speed limits," Wrye said. "Now they will have to pay the price for their recklessness. '"The new fines will restore the deterrent factor, which had been eroded by 20 years of inflation since the last increase." Wyre said the higher fines will also support the Ontario Motorist Protection Plan, a package which is intended to reduce the human and economic costs of traffic ac- cidents in this province. The proposed schedule will see fines triple at the top end -- bring- ing the cost of a ticket for driving 60 km over the speed limit to $585. Under the existing schedule, the fine would be $125. A conviction for 15 km over the limit would cost $45, up from $18.75. The current and amended schedule are as follows: Existing speeding fine schedule: 1-19 km/h over - $1.25 km/h; 20-39 km/h over - $1.75 km/h; 40 -59 km/h over - $2.50 km/\.; 60 or more km/h over - $3.25 km/h. Proposed speeding fine schedule: 1-19 km/h over - $3.00 km/h; 20 - 34d km/h over - $4.50 km/h; 35 -49 km/h over - $7.00 km/h; 50 or more km/h over - $9.75 km/h. Health Wealth, Quit Line will help smokers through trauma of quitting "Well, it's that time again, New Year's Eve, and I do want to quit. I know I should quit smok- ing, but I find it hard to imagine myself without a cigarette with my morning coffee, or when I'm with my friends. It's not easy. I work up my nerve to quit, but then I feel that I can't do it. And if I quit, I'm afraid I might gain weight or I'll be tense, and probably want to start smoking again. I know how it is. I've tried to quit a million times. but this time I really want to quit. I know I should quit, for me and my fami- ly. If I try again I really want to suc- ceed!" "Tobacco use kills over 35,000 Ca- nadians per year. Yet we know that most smokers want to quit," said Elinor Wilson, vice presi- | dent, public affairs for the Canadian Council on Smokin and Health. "As wi most addictions, uitting is something t people may re- uire help with, and t's. what the Quit Line is all about," she said. "The Quit Line has three goals," said Wilson. "We want it to help educate smokers about the that it would be easier for them to give up their health risks involved; to identify quitting op- hard drug addiction than it would be to give up tions; and to refer smokers to a healthcare pro- smoking, and their addiction to nicotine.
