Xmas memories Beugog Island Area News by Mrs. Earl Reader Well, Christmas 1989 is over and we have time to look back in- stead of ahead. We recall the church celebrations with all preparations and excitement of those dear little children with the impressions they learned. Then the family gatherings with specials for members in hospital and nursing homes. Then sadly, we remember the broken homes and the first Christmas with a lov- ing member missing. World wide itis a memorable Christmas with war and governmental changes and the life sacrifice for freedom. Now, we enter a clean-up period and enjoyment of gifts, as we prepare for a New Year where we resolve to improve our own lives and show consideration {or others. We sympathize with the young family living ina trailer on the farm of Mr. and Mrs: Nick Hen- shaw, Conc. 9 as early Sun. mor- ning, they lost their home and all possessions to a fire. We feel for Rev. Lynne Belfry- Graham who had the misfortune to injure her right elbow before Christmas but relentlessly car- ried on her duties as usual. The congregation of the Island United Church intended to care for two unfortunate families for Christmas but the response was so generous, they were able to care for an extra family. We thank all the Sunday School teachers, choir, youth leaders, and various groups for their ser- vice and leadership. The Christmas music at the Island United on Sunday was specialized with piano, organ and 3 violins. A long time music leader, Mrs. Edna Beckett was called to the front to accept appreciation from whe congregation and a gift of a "Christmas" plate. Readers of this column are thanked for vo-opsration and wished a Happy New Year. The "Head" U.C.W. will meet Wed., Jan. 3 at the home of Mrs. Jan. Gerrow. » Plan your New Year party Ringing in the new decade with a New Year's Eve party requires more than simply having lots of faod and refreshments on hand. Responsible party hosts have to plan ahead to help ensure the well-being of their guests and pro- tect themselves from legal liability. The Addiction Research Foun- dation reminds revellers that under Ontario law both hosts and bartenders may be held liable for the safety of their intoxicated guest and for any damages then cause others. Robert Solomon, professor of law at the University of Western Ontario, is an expert on the civil liability of alcohol providers, and a consultant with the Addiction Research Foundation's Server In- tervention Program (SIP). "The host has a basic respon- sibility with regards to the con- duct of an inebriated guest," he says. "If you serve your guests past the point of intoxication and they harm themselves or others, you can be held liable." How quickly guests consume alcoholic beverages, how much they weigh and their age are critical factors in determining whether they should drive or take a cab home. Don't make alcohol overly ac- cessible at your party by having an open bar. Make sure you offer plenty of low or non alcoholic alternatives. Stop serving alcohol well before guests begin to leave. Make sure there is plenty of food available. High protein food, such 4 PORT PERRY PRINCE ALBERT UNITED CHURCH "Rev. D. Robert J. LePage, B.A. M. Div. Rev. Donald E. Tansley B.A. M. Div. The ARF advises that alcohol consumption be limited to less than one standard drink per hour to stay safely below the legal limit of .08 percent BAC. A standard drink refers to 12 oz. beer, 5 oz. table wine, 3 oz. fortified wine or 1 '% oz. distilled spirits. Assuring the moderate con- sumption of alcohol will not pre- vent the holiday spirit from flow- ing. However, if your guests are going to drink too much, make sure when they decide to hit the road, it's in the back of a cab. THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IN CANADA Rev. Stuart McEntyre, B.A., B.D.
