McLaughlin Gallery holds war art exhibit This exhibition of Canadian war art opens at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery on January 29 and continues until March 4. Lest We Forget commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of the beginning of World War II. At the same time, it pays tribute to those artists who recorded the war through their art and to all Cana- dians who served in the war. The exhibition offers a selection of paintings, drawings, prints and Sculpture covering both War I and II. It includes many works belonging to the Canadian War Museum that have rarely been seen by the public. Such distinguished British artists as Paul Nash, Wyndham Lewis, Augustus John, and Sir Alfred Mannings worked for the Cana- dian War Records Office in World War 1. They are all represented in the exhibition, together with such noted contemporary Cana- dians who were official War Ar- tists in World War II as Bruno and Molly Bobak, Pegi Nicol MacLeod, Alex Colville, Charles Comfort, and Carl Schaefer. In her catalogue text, art historian and Guest Curator, Dr. Maria Tippet discusses the development of both war art pro- grams in Canada. She describes the people who were the driving forces behind them, such as Lord Beaverbrook in World War I and Vincent Massey in World War II Lest We Forget is an exhibition of great relevance for the people of Durham Region.
