Cawker Public School opened its doors to 505 students on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 1989 with Harry Kiezebrink as its first principal. The Star introduced a new change of format in the paper, with the Real Estate and Classi- fied advertising moved into a seperate section. An entertain- ment page, including a cross- word puzzle, cartoons and horo- scope was alsointroduced. Scugog Township council passed a bylaw which prohibits homeowners from burning leaves, grass, brush or rubbish on their property. Don and Ralph Swain were honoured at the annual Police Awards night for their actions which saved a man from a burn- ingcar. It was annouced that Admin- istrator Earl Cuddie's office and staff will be moved to the town- ship owned house at 208 North Street. Detective Carl Fitzgerald and Sgt. Ken Hudson of the Durham Region Police, received their 20 year exemplary service awards. The Ontario Municipal Board ruled a Scugog by-law for a sen- iors apartment building is in- valid because ratepayers were not notified of the by-law before - itwas passed last March. Joel Aldred acted as modera- tor for a public meeting orga- nized by the Citizens Against Unjust Taxes . Over 300 people attended the meeting to vent their anger at municipal, re- gional and school board offi- cials. The Port Perry Star received an award from Crime Stoppers International for a story which dealt with the re-enactment of a hit and run accident in the township which left a six year old girl with serjous injuries. NOVEMBER 1989 The body found on Ghost Road was identified as Alfred Meitner of Whitby, and police are requesting assistance from the public with their investiga- tion. : Premier David Peterson made a brief stop in Port Perry for a quick tour of Scugog Shores Museum and to meet with delegates of the VIA Rail Passenger Assoc. Anne Bonney, an original mu- sical production by Tom Millar and Nina Foxall commenced its three week run at Town Hall 1873. Durham Board of Education unveiled a $320 million , five year capital forecast for projects they say are "a must" as far as the Board is concerned. Durham Region water and sewer users could be looking at a nine percent hike in fees this January, made necessary by the rapid residential growth in the region. Scugog's building rmits continue to slide, with $14 mil- lion less taken out this year, compared to 1988. Dr. Robert McClure, a mis- sionary surgeon and former moderator of the United Church of Canada was the guest speaker at the Nestleton United Church anniversary ser- vice. . George Burnett accepted the job of new head coach with the Niagara Falls Thunder, resign- ing his position of assistant coach of the Oshawa Generals. Angry Victorian Village resi- dents met with council and the developer to try and come to a solution to correct the serious drainage problems in the new subdivision. Over 2,000 people signed pe- titions throughout Port Perry Plaza, asking for traffic signals tobe installed at the entrance to the Plaza and 7A highway. After 28 days, Ontario's 9,000 striking community college teachers ' returned to class- rooms, along with 110,000 full time students. The Port Perry Yacht Club celebrated their 50th Anniver- sary at a banquet held at the Greenbank Hall. One of the clubs founding members, Phil Orde was guest speaker. Most Port Perry residents be- gan picking up their mail from one of the 88 new community "super mailboxes". There has been much confusion over the new system, but it is here to stay. ' Miraculously no one was seri- .ously hurt when a gravel truck went out of control and ran into a Nestleton gas bar, knocking . off the pumps and starting a fire. Plans to expand the Oak Hills Golf Course by nine holes, and develop 23 more estate lots is on hold as Scugog council insists on a second road being built into the developement. The develop- ersays itis not necessary. Scugog council is preparing a bylaw to make Paxton Street a through street, and Bigelow a stop street. DECEMBER 1989 An early morning fire over the Settlement House shops claimed the life of an elderly woman, and caused considera- ble smoke and water damage to the building. ~ Police layed charges of mur- der against an Ajax man in the death of Alfred Meitner. Meit- ner's body was found five weeks ago along the Ghost Road. Scugog council has banned snowmobiles from using the Ap- ple Valley subdivision walkway which comes out to 7A highway. An 18 year old Nestleton girl, Debra Surman, was named as one of 12 Junior Citizen of the Year by the Ontario Communi- ty Newspaper Association. Due to a serious shortage of hydro, Ontario Hydro has asked Ontario residents to cut back on consumption of power.
