PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, January 3, 1990 -- 29 oY You can win by playing penalty free game Good, clean, fun hockey receiv- ed another endorsement when former Team Canada and Na- tional Hockey League star Paul * MORE SPORTS on page 11 Real Estate Section Henderson announced that almost 60 percent of the teams that entered the 1989 Esso Penalty Free Sweepstakes won or tied their game. Henderson made his remarks at a media conference to launch the 1990 Esso Penalty Free Sweepstakes. 'For the second year in a row, the results of this program prove that penalty-free hockey is winning hockey even at the N.H.L. level. Last season the New York Rangers played penal- ty free and defeated the New York Islanders 5 to 1 in a National Hockey League game on January 7, 1989." The Esso Penalty Free Sweepstakes is another amateur hockey initiative to promote skills, safety and sportsmanship in Canada's most popular sport. Developed by the members of the Hockey Development Centre for Ontario the program is sponsored by Esso Petroleum Canada and supported by the Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Recreation. Any Ontario amateur hockey team that plays a penalty-free game from January 1 to 31, 1990 is eligible to enter the Sweepstakes. By submitting an entry form and a copy of the game sheet the entire team will be entered into the contest and have an opportunity to win the Grand Prize; a Nintendo Action Set! Another 15 team prizes of J.LLL. Citizen personal stereo cassette players will also be up for grabs when the random draw is held on February 21, 1990. 'Everyone is a winner in this contest. Each player on all eligi- ble teams will receive an Achieve- ment Award Certificate and a col- ourful helmet decal in recognition of their penalty-free game and it's this emphasis on team play and sportsmanship that attracted our sponsorship" said Rob Easson of Esso Petroleum Canada. Last year's program attracted over 2,800 entries during the 17 days of the contest, so with the Sweepstakes entering its 3rd season, expectations are high for even more penalty-free games in January of 1990. "I would like to commend Esso Petroleum Canada fortheir ongo- ing partnership in the Penalty Free Sweepstakes," said Ken Black, Minister of Tourism and Recreation. "We all benefit by the promotion of good sportsmanship." Entry forms are available from local amateur hockey association representatives, Ministry of Tourism and Recreation Field Of- fices, H.D.C.0.
