This new process, designed in response to the revised Animal Pedigree Act, allows for the 'registration' of animals formerly denied the privilege. The first animal to be registered under 'Full Spec- trum"> was RAWDONCREEK FIVE M LAVENDER QE CDN F 5000000. owned bv Ken McCurdy, R.R. 2, Stirling, Ontario. "Lavender" was born 1989 March 01. Mr. McCurdy submitted a total of seven (7) animals for registration. Two of these were first time applications and the other five (5) were submitted for upgrading from the former NIP program to registered purebred (3) and registered percentage (2) status. Included in this group was "Lavender's" high production dam, RAWDONCREEK ELB LAVENDER QE CDN F 1242357F., upgraded from NIP E. PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 9, 1990 -- 13 New technology for the farmers Ken McCurdy is the first of an expected large number of Hols- tein dairy farmers to take advan- tage of this tremendous oppor- tunity to complete the move into the world of purebred cattle. He is pleased that these select descendants of his NIP breeding program are now receiving the recognition he feels they deserve. After graduating from high school, Ken formally began dairy farming with his father. At that time, he personally owned ap- proximately twenty (20) head of grade Holsteins. A review of the McCurdy breeding and produc- tion records shows that these NIP animals were given equal treat- ment, remaining in the herd as long as their production and type traits were as good as their purebred herd mates. Ken and his father own 100 head of purebreds under the prefix "ROSEKEN."" One result of their progressive breeding program is the winning of the Premier Breeder Banner at the Hastings County Holstein Show in 1986. 28 at Alliston. Serainar topics will address components of a successful retire- ment - sufficient income, a varie- ty of enjoyable activities, a flexi- ble timetable and a healthy lifestyle. Registration fee of $180.00 pro- vides overnight accommodation, meals and seminar speakers and materials. Registration will be received at Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, Box 1030, Guelph, Ontario N1H 6N1, Atten- tion: Pre-Retirement Seminars, on a first-come, first-served basis. 'Gallery display An exhibition focusing on the work of Kathleen Munn and Edna Tacon will open at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery on January 11 and continue until February 18. The exhibition will include fifty- four oils, watercolors, collages and drawings executed by these two Canadian artists from 1915 to © 1947. Working the first half of this century, Munn and Tacon created a personal art influenced by Euro- pean modernism. These artists experimented with cubism and non-objective work before abstraction was considered a viable direction for Canadian art. Although the quality of their work was acknowledged by contem- porary artists and critics, the dominance of the nationalist land- scape tradition of the Group of Seven and its followers prevented the pioneering work of these two women from receiving lasting recognition in this country. Most of the work created by Kathleen Munn and Edna Tacon is in the possession of their respective descendants and has not been exhibited publicly in Canada in decades. This exhibi- tion is an attempt to reinstate Munn and Tacon to their rightful place in Canadian art history. The exhibition and catalogue together provide a more balanc- ed understanding of modernism in Canada, and will broaden our Atthe rate your GM Dealer is going, 1990 promises to be the best knowledge of the position of women artists in Canada in the first half of the twentieth century.
