Canada Pete's Pet Pantry store has new headquarters What does it take to move a pet store from one location to another? About 30 grocery push carts, 200 milk crates, five pick-up trucks, two trailers, 30 people and alot of patience. That's what Pete and Pat Kneale discovered when they moved their established store, Pete's Pet Pantry, from one lo- cation to another in the Port Perry Plaza over the weekend. The store, originally located between The Best of Things florist and the Sears catalogue store, was experiencing some growing pains. With only 1,000 square feet to work within, the Kneales just couldn't incorpo- rate all the supplies and pets they wanted to into the store. e move to the Lifestyle 2000 office, between the Big V Drugstore and The Gate Res- taurant, doubled the floor space and the panache of Pete's Pet Pantry. The Kneales enlisted the aid of friends, family and customers for the move. On Saturday, af- ter all the stores in the Plaza were closed, the trucks, trailers and grocery carts began to roll. Luckily, most of the store's furry (and scaley) little crea- tures had been sold, so it was just a matter of moving inani- mate supplies from one store to another. > After 2 1/2 hours, everything had been moved, almost with- outincident. "We only had one close en- counter," Pete said, recounting the time when a pick-up truck, loaded with canned food, nearly backed right through the plate glass windows at the front of the store. Crews of people, including Pat's parents -- Garfield and June Harding -- continued to work almost around the clock Sunday to ensure the store's openingon Monday. The store originally opened two years ago, when both the Kneales left their Toronto- based jobs -- Pete as a police- man and Pat as an executive secretary. Why such a drastic career change? "It just seemed like a pleas- ant business to be in," Pete ex- plained. "Everyone loves their pets." When it fot opened, the store stocked mainly pet food and accessories. But "as the demand came true, we started selling fish," Pete said. It wasn't long before hamsters, turtles and kittens were included in the merchan- dise. The new location allows the Kneales to increase the number of pets for sale. The aquariums will be stocked with mostly community fish, but there will be some "ag- gressive" fish tanks, Pete said. The store will also have a bird room filled with budgies, canar- ies, finches and cockatiels. A wall of cages has also been installed to display puppies, kit- tens, bunnies, hamsters, and - mice. Pete had absolutely no busi- ness management background when he opened the store in No- vember 1987. Common sense (Turn to page 19) a. ES ESL A }
