The Scugog Overhead Doors Pee Wee 2 team finished off their league play with a loss Friday night to the team from Bowman- ville by a score of 3-1. Port's only goal came on an ex- cellent 3-way passing play started by Ian Shrigley to Kent Taylor which sent Mike Labanovich in on a breakaway who fired a knuckle- Puck shot off the post. Way to go e! On Saturday the team was in a tourney in Lakefield. Game One - Port faced the host team and outscored them 4-2. Mike Labanovich got the puck rolling in the faceoff circle to Ian Shrigley who lifted it into the net. Lakefield then scored twice in the second 2 min. apart making the score 2-1. Port scored 3 unanswered goals in the 3rd all unassisted. Tying goal to Brent Harper on a rebound shot from the goalie. Winning goal to Matt Hobbs on a beautiful end to end rush scoring on his own re- bound. Insurance goal to Jason Phillips with a blistering shot from the point which gave the goalie difficulty. Final 4-2. Game Two - Port faced the team from Bancroft - a team highly undermatched for this tourney. Port won 11-0. As the score went higher Port used this to their advantage to try things they don't normally use in a Sportsland closer game. Goals in this game went to Jason Reid, Ian McCready and Ian Shrigley 2 each. Mike Labanovich, Matt Hobbs, Rick Olaisen, Brent Harper and Daryl Bourgeois 1 each. Assists Jason Reid and Jeremy Geer 3 each, Ian McCready 2 and Mike Labanovich, Matt Hobbs, Rick Olaisen and Daryl Bourgeois, 1 each. This win put Port into the cham- pionship game in which they fac- ed a select team from Bowmanville. This game had the fans from both sides on the edges of their seats. Port opened the scoring in the first period on some good. forechecking by Jeremy Geer to Rick Olaisen who popped it up over the goalie. This was the on- ly scoring in the first. Second period saw Port and Bowmanville exchange goals. Bowmanville scored on a two man advantage as Port was ser- ving 2 penalties. Port's goal came as Ian Shrigley drew 2 defensemen to him and then flipped the puck ahead which put Mike Labanovich and the goalie in a foot race to the puck. Mike won out and put Port ahead 2-1. James Paterson playing steadi- ly in goal with his Tony Esposito style of goaltending proved Bantams lose tournament to host team in final The Sportsland Bantams travelled to King City last weekend to play in their 5 team round-robin tournament. In this set-up you play every team once with the bottom team dropping out and the top 4 teams playing in the finals. Port's first game was Friday night against the home team from King City. This was a fast paced physical game with both teams taking a lot of penalties. Unfortunately the penalties were the only thing that was marked on the score sheet as the game ended in a 0-0 tie. Adam Heyes played very well in picking up the shutout. Our second game was early Saturday afternoon against Sunderland. Port played a much better game and were able to come out of this contest 4-2 win- ners. Sunderland jumped into a 1-0 lead before Port got on track and scored 4 goals in a row. Sean McEnaney scored the first goal on a nice passing play with Jason Coutoulakis and Lindsay Parry. Chris MacLeod gave us a 2-1 lead connecting with a passout from McEnaney with Parry also getting an assist. Todd Smart put us up 3-1 stealing the puck at the blueline and going'in alone before dekeing the goalie. Jason Coutoulakis finished off the scor- ing picking up a rebound in front of the net and putting it behind the goalie. Port's third game of the tourna- ment was against a physcial team from Pelham. Pelham took con- trol of the play early in this game scoring their first three goals on the powerplay. They scored twice more before Port finally got on the scoreboard on a goal by Todd Smart with Aron Royle and Steve Desautels getting the assists. The boys were able to play with Pelham but ran into trouble by 2 N tak acessary penaltiesthat . @4AEEEE-------------------------- ray tm > Be PRT TPP ey SR HSE LL SEA allowed Pelham to take control. Sportsland's final game of the round-robin was early Sunday morning against Stirling. Stirling opened the scoring with a short- handed goal late in the first period. Steve Desautels tied the score mid-way through the second period with a bullet drive from just outside the blueline. Port then ran into penalty trouble again and Stirling scored two powerplay goals before the second period ended which made the score 3-1. The third period was unevent- ful with neither team setting any good chances to score. Because of this loss Port moved into the B championship against King City. The final was once again a close game with penalties being Port's downfall. King City scored late in the first period and the score re- mained 1-0 until the third period. King City scored 6 seconds into the third period to take a 2-0 lead. Port had numerous chances through the rest of the game and finally scored as they pulled their goalie for an extra attacker with Chad Garvock scoring assisted by Scott Wylie. This was all the scor- ing Port could muster as their goal scoring slump continued as they lost 2-1. Port's next home game is Wednesday night at 7:40 against Sunderland. Hope to see you ere. Third period - Bowmanville got the jump on Port as they scored 21 seconds into the period. As the period went on both Port and Bowmanville tested goaltending power. With 2:33 left Bowmanville finally got the lead but Port not laying down yet came back 1:15 later on a pass from Ian Shrigley to Mike Labanovich to Kent Taylor who rifled it between the pipes sending the game into Overtime! Port's first sudden death over- time didn't seem to bother them as they played a very steady 4 min. Offense was fantastic, but was constantly denied by the lone figure at the other end of the arena. With 32 seconds left Bowman- ville scored on a very sneaky(!) come around from behind the net play and they tucked it into our PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 9, 1990 -- 25 net.
