TO {EE ------------------------_--------_--m----mmm nm EH --_--_-- " 14 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 16, 1990 Biggest Gala Event of Year a ce Hospital to hold Vale Calling all sweethearts. Are you looking for that extra bo gift for your loved one on alentine's Day? The Community Memorial Hospital has a gift suggestion for you. You can treat your favorite or gal with an invitation to a candlelight dinner and dance, and at the same time help out the Community Memorial Hos- pital. The second annual fundrais- er takes on a ""sweetheart' theme this year. Debbie McGarry, foundation development officer at Commu- nity Memorial Hospital pre- dicts "Candlelight and Wine -- A Sweetheart Event" will be the "biggest gala event of the year." Tickets for the semi-formal event are $200 a couple (or $100 for singles looking for love) and are going fast, reports Mrs. McGarry. Tickets can be bought for a table of eight guests, as well. The tickets can be purchased at Nuts About Chocolate, Pine- ridge Packers and the Commu- nity Memorial Hospital. Along with the engraved invi- tation, the ticket purchasers will receive a box of delicious chocolates to give their sweet- heart on Valentine's Day -- an appetizer to the main event on Saturday, Feb. 17. The sweetheart gala will be- gin with cocktails at 6 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Banquet Hall. A six-course dinner, catered by Emiel's Place will follow at 7 p.m. To enhance the candlelight ambiance, a wandering min- strel, Rob Fielding, will sere- nade couples during the dinner. Mr. Fielding is the resident gui- tar player at Fazio's Restaurant in Oshawa. Auctioneer Don Cochrane will take centre stage at 9 p.m. to auction off various items do- nated by local merchants. Some of the items up for grabs are a heart-shaped hinged box, silk scarves and framed prints. At 9:30, sweethearts will swing into action on the dance floor to the music of the Taylor Brothers Band. Helping the evening run sweetly will be master of cere- monies Jerry Taylor. A similar fundraising event was held last year. The Spring Gala was a success under the di- rection of local businessmen Larry Emmerson and Peter Hvidsten, raising $20,000 for the hospital building fund. The hospital has a $2.7 million goal for their expansion project. All proceeds from the sweet- heart gala will go to the Com- munity Memorial Hospital Building Fund. paper. Random Jottings by ).P. Hvidsten (from page 6) First of all, contrary to my comments in the column, "No", | don't think my wife purposely waits for me to get into the show- er before flushing the toilet, and "No", | don't think she is re- sponsible for putting out clean towels and new rolls of toilet My entire column, Morning Madness, was meant only to + poke fun at morning frustrations I'm sure we all (male and fe- male) experience. It was in no way intended to point fingers or direct fault at my wife, or any other woman for that matter. * Sweetheart Event will be an evening of romance that will hopefully put lots of money In the But it was obvious by Nancy's reply, by way of a letter to the editor last week, that my column hit a nerve. And by all re- ports, there are many other women out there who feel the same way, as she has had many favourable comments about her letter. In fact, my former wife even called congratulating Nancy for her letter. There is no doubt, my wife and | would think most other mothers, are considerably more active in the everyday duties of raising children than are the majority of fathers. I'd be the first to admit that yes, she does get up in the mornings and feed the girls their pablum; yes, she does change their diapers, and wash their clothes; yes, she feeds the dog and lets it out for a whiz; and yes she gets Matt his bowl of cereal and turns on his favourite TV show. But she also does a hundred other household chores, like making meals, washing and ironing clothes, changing beds, cleaning house, shopsiag for food etc. In other words she is a damn good mother, wife, and partner. While | admit to my wife doing the majority of the house- hold chores, | wouldn't want readers of this column to get the wrong impression of me, thinking | lie around in bed very morning, while she is downstairs taking care of the troops all by herself. I do get up and take early morning feedings (usually about | 5:00 a.m.) and then go back to bed for a while. | may not get downstairs by 6:30 a.m., but I've shared being puked on, oped on, and drooled on. I've also shared the all night feed- ] ina sessions, the continuous changing of diapers and many other household chores. So maybe the real question here is, "do | feel my sharing of the household duties is equal?" And to that question | have no hesitation in answering, "absolutely not!"
