Save those soup labels Nestleton UCW Unit Meets The first meeting of year 1990, was held at the lovely rural home of Anne Emerson, Nestleton, on January 9, at 1:30 p.m.. After members had assembled...Anne had an interesting tour of her home; which is in the process of being restored; with final restora- tion in sight. Meeting was brought to order . with leader Mabel Cawker in the chair...with Barb Weir acting as secretary. A New Year poem en- titled, "The Little Things" was read and a warm welcome ex- tended to those present. Sorry! several members are still away due to illness. Anne presented the Devotional period...with a splendid paper she had prepared on "Hands," the many uses of our hands...sym- bolic of service, helpfulness and accomplishment...the human body's most outstanding strurc- ture. Hymns "Take My Life" and "Love Divine" were sung follow- ed by Anne closing this portion with Prayer. A good response was given when roll was called - "How I would like to be treated if I were a Shut-in." Correspondence in- cluded a cordial invitation to the 100th birthday celebration being held for Mrs. Evva Davidge, on Feb. 10th, 2-5 p.m. in the Masonic Hall, Port Perry. For those plan- ning to attend R.S.V.P. by Jan. 20, 1990, please! Also - several thank you notes re- Chirstmas Cheer boxes were rec'd. Minutes were read by Barb Weir and approved, and members were pleased with the statement of the treasurer Mrs. Neta Fish. General president Jean Williams reported on the noon dinner for the Farm Labour Pool...to be held in Nestleton Community Centre, January 25. Members are asked to save us- ed stamps and Campbell Soup labels, to be turned in to Barb Weir. Also - members are asked to keep a record of friendly calls to neighbours, sick, those in hospital, etc. to be turned in mon- thly and totalled at the end of the year and sent to the Oshawa Presbyterial in the annual report. Anne had planned a program which aroused much interested. She presented a demonstration on Japanese Brush Painting. She chose..."a Japanese Orchid' and "Bamboo Grass' which were sketched quickly with skillful strokes of the brush. The finished sketches looked well done to NESTLETON NEWS BY MABEL CAWKER us...and program was enjoyed by all. Our thanks to Anne! Over refreshments...a pleasant social time followed. Barb Weir gave warm appreciation to Anne for opening her home; for the fascinating program; social hour; and to all who helped with the excellent meeting. Luncheon Enjoyed On Friday, a lovely noon lun- cheon was "'hosted" by Cliff and Chris Davis, Hyde House, Scogog Point Rd., in honour of Chris' mother, Mrs. Christina Hender- son before she leaves for her home in Edinburgh, Scotland, after an 8 weeks visit. Those pre- sent on this delightful occasion were friends Neta Fish, Blackstock, and Sam and Mabel Cawker, Scugog Point Rd.. As we chatted and discussed the current topics of the day...around the luncheon table...a most engaging sight met our eyes through the window...the colour- ful birds were in numbers around the bird feeder! There were Car- dinals, Blue Jays, and the "'ever hungry" Mourning Doves and Sparrows, and of course the bright, lively little "much loved" Chickadees...and many more species I find hard to name. What an enjoyable time feasting - visiting - and bird watching our thanks to the Davis family for the fantastic day! Family Interests Sunday evening saw Neta Fish, daughter Audrey and Jim Leishman and son William of Reaboro, stepping out in style for dinner at the Gate Restaurant in Port Perry. A most tempting meal! Alan and Eleanor Cawker of Oshawa, were Saturday guests with Sam and Mabel Cawker at the farmstead...and a most in- teresting visit was enjoyed during the coffee hour. We should do this more often! Nestleton United Church Greeters at the Sunday morn- ing service, January 14, 11:15 a.m. were Robert and Carol Mairs, with a fair attendance on hand. Rev. Dale Davis presented a strong message on "The Bounty of God's Grace & Love," based on Scripture Isaiah 49:1-7 and John 1:29-34, read by Chuck Hill. The children's theme "Be a reflector of God's Love," and the minister used a flashlight and mirror to illustrate! The Ladies quartet sang 'Mary Mild" accompanied by pianist Carol Mairs. The offering was received by Robert Mairs and Richard MacKenzie. Next Sunday, January 21, In- stallation of U.C.W. Executives. The congregational meeting for Nestleton United Church will be held on Sunday, January 28. Service closed with hymn "Pass It On" - Benediction and Three Fold Amen. Evening U.C.W. Unit For December meeting, Janice MacKenzie was hostess...and a lovely pot luck supper was a highlight. Arlene Malcolm read the Christmas story. Roll call - My favourite Christmas Carol. All gathered around the piano and sang a number of Carols with Carol Mairs at the piano. The January 1990 meeting was held at the home of Yvonne Priebe, Caesarea, with 7 members present. Fairley conducted the Church service at 11:00 a.m. in the Nestleton Presbyterian Church on January 14, 1990, and Joyce Taylor played the organ. The responsive Psalm reading was no. 40:1-12 with Scripture readings from Isaiah 49 and St. John 1:29-39. Excerpts from Rev. Wm. Fairley's sermon as follows: However dreadful or discourag- ing things may be in a world of violence and immorality we must never forget God is in control of the world. We must be patient and trust the loving kindness of our Saviour however difficult the cir- cumstances may be.
