24 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 30, 1990 PORT PERRY STAR SPORTS Could be Ajax or Cobourg.......first home game this Sunday night MolJack playoff picture still not settled The Port Perry ModJacks head into the first round of the Central Junior C playoffs this week, but just who their oppo- nent will be won't be deter- mined until late tonight (Jan. 30) MoJack general manager Murray Parliament said Mon- day the opponent could be ei- ther Cobourg or Ajax, depend- ing on who Bowmanville selects asits first round opposition. If as some observers pre- duct, the Eagles select Cobourg in the first round, the MoJacks will take Ajax, leaving Ux- bridge to battle it out with the improving Lakefield Chiefs who took the sixth and final playoff spot. Little Britain Merchants apparently missed the playoffs with 22 points, two back of Lakefield. Even a Merchant win Monday night over Co- bourg would not help their cause. Mr. Parliament told the Star Monday that no matter who the MoJacks meet in the first round best of seven affair, the first playoff home game at the Scugog Arena will be this Sanday evening (Feb.4) at 7:30 The MoJacks wound up the Central Junior C regular sched- ule on a winning note as they thumped the Cobourg Cougers 7-2 Saturday evening at the Scugog Arena. After falling behind 2-0 in the first period, the MoJacks got their game on track in the second with a couple of power play goals by Brad Menzies and Jim Vernon. Late in the period, Chris Arsenault found the range for what proved to be the winner. MoJacks turned the heat up a notch in the final stanza and counted four un-answered markers to salt the victory away. ; John Harman, Dave Bur- nett, Jim Vernon (with his sec- ond) and Kevin Gibson rounded out the scoring for Port Perry. Cobourg goals came from Tyler Douglas and Kevin McAl- pine. Dwayne Mackie handled the goal-tending chores for the MoJacks and kicked aside 34 shots. MoJacks sent 41 pucks at Jason Riehlin the Couger cage. MoJacks took just six mi- nors in this one, along with a fighting major to Darrin Lee. Cougers took ten minors and a fighting major to Pearcy. Warren Geer enjoyed a fine night as he picked up four as- sists, and Todd Taylor had two. Last Tuesday evening (Jan. 23) the MoJacks jour- neyed west to meet rival Ux- bridge Bruins and had to settle for a 6-65 saw-off. Neither team looked very inspired in this game which was marred by an endless stream of minor penalties and numerous icing and off-side whistles. After falling behind 3-1 in the first period (Todd Taylor notched the lone goal) MoJacks pulled their act together in the second as Dave Burnett used his long reach to pop in two quick ones. Paul Wilkins added the final goal in this period. In the third with the scored tied at 4-4, Steve Connors gave Port Perry a 5-4 lead that stood up until the 13 minute mark when the Bruins got the equa- lizer. John Harman had two as- sistsin this one. Paul Sinclair led the Bruins attack with two goals. In other Junior C action over the weekend, Bowmanville and Little Britain skated to a 5- 5 draw on Saturday night. On Sunday, Lakefield clipped Uxbridge 6-4 and Bow- manville ran rough-shod over Ajax by a 9-2 margin as it looks like the Eagles are dusting off their sniping sights just in time for the playoffs. SLAPSHOTS: Just when it looked like the MoJacks were going to have all the troops healthy for playoffs, the team was dealt a blow in Uxbridge when forward Danny Maw suf- fered abroken wrist. Maw side-stepped a body check in front of his own bench, but the Uxbridge player seemed to jam Maw's arm against his stick and he went down in a lot of pain. MoJacks wound up with 48 points in the 36 game regular schedule based on 20 wins, eight ties and eight losses. The team had 197 goals scored and surrendered 143 for a very respectable 3.9 goals- against average. The MoJacks enjoyed suc- cess against both Cobourg and Ajax during the regular sched- e. In the six meetings with Ajax, MoJacks won three, lost two and tied one. Against Co- bourg, they had three wins and three ties. The format for the second round of the playoffs gets a bit muddled, but well try to ex- plainithere. If Bowmanville win its opening round, it has the choice of taking a second round bye, or playing. If Bowmanville opts to play rather than take a bye, Port Perry would have the bye option in the second round (as- suming MoJacks win the first round) Bowmanville likely will take the bye, meaning Port Perry will meet the winner of Lakefield-Uxbridge first round series (again, assuming Mo- Jacks win their opening round) The opening round playoff looks pretty good for the Mo- Jacks, based on their play dur- ing the regular schedule. Aside from the injury to hard working Danny Maw, the teams just about healthy. Goaltenders Dwayne Mackie and Tony Sortino are tough competitors and the de- fense has played well all sea- son, despite injuries and sus- pensions. Up front the team got a lot of points from John Harman and Brad Menzies, and they may be matched again with the speedy Warren Geer, who has had to play the blue line be- cause of injuries to the defense corps. Jim Vernon has been put- ting points on the board in re- cent games, and Dave Burnett has all the tools to score a goal at any time, especially when he parks his large frame in front of the net on the power play. Specialty teams are usual- ly the difference in a short playoff series. The MoJacks rely heavily on the penalty killing skills of Todd Taylor, Darrin Lee, Steve Durham, and Kevin Desrosiers. John Lally and Len Giaca- lone have been out of the line up recently, though both should be ready to goin the playoffs. Lally has had some big nights on the score sheet for the MoJacks this season, and both he and the veteran Giacalone add size and toughness for those battles in the corners and along the boards. One minute into the game, Trevor Smith came flying out of his end and shot on net. Justin Halligan picked up the rebound and passed it to Kevin Hobbs who put Port ahead 1-0. It was end to end hockey when, 2 minutes left in the second, Shane Norton passed to Robert Gracie who made an awesome move out in front and put it behind the goalie. Way to go Robert! Paul Shrigley and Jamie Trick shared the shutout between the pipes with a big thanks to the guys out front for all their help. Port met the Oshawa Black Hawks in Exhibition Sunday mor- ning. Their only marker came with 2 minutes left in the game. Kevin Hobbs dug the puck out of the corner and put it out in front to Matt Phillips who fired it in on the short side. These guys travelled to Cobourg Sunday night and came home victorious after a hard fought game. This game was end to end with no score for 21% periods. Port was outplaying and out- shooting Cobourg, but Cobourg's goalies came up big. Paul Shrigley made a great save when there were 3 Cobourg players in all alone. * With 6 minutes left in the third Getting On Sunday at the local arena the Pineridge Tweens final league fame was against the very talented Woodville team. Our girls started slowly and found themselves trailing early in the game, however, they battled back to give Woodville a game. The final was 5 to 2 for Woodville. Goal scorers for us were Lisa Dodd and Marci Zuly. Assists were awarded to Julie Bull and Leea Kinnunen. This team started the year with period, Trevor Smith followed the play deep into Cobourg's end and put the puck out in front to Shane, who scored, giving Port the vic- tory. The score ended in Port's favour 1-0. That sets Port with 2 wins and a loss in the round robin. Their next game is in Port, Thursday night at 8:00 against Bowmanville. better three girls who had never played ringette before. Two of the girls namely Marci & Julie were point getters in this game. These girls along with Jenna Norton have continued to improve and become more aggressive and are a big reason we have con- tinued to improve. Next Saturday we play three games at the Winterlude Tourna- ment in Ottawa and the girls are looking forward to getting away. Good luck girls!
