Losing tough 5-3 final to Kingston Township PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 30, 1990 -- 25 Legionaires win silver at Port tournament The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 419 Pee Wee A's had a bit- tersweet week of hockey action. Tuesday night in Cobourg, the Legionaires were denied a chance to clinch a second round playoff spot when they lost 2-0 to the host team despite a pretty good all around effort. However, Cobourg did Port a large favour on Friday night in Stouffville, winning 5-3 to eliminate the Clippers from fur- ther play and set up a series which will probably start with Port, visiting Cobourg on Wed. Saturday, Port hosted their tournament and opened with a surprisingly tough 6-4 victory over the Oshawa Red Wings. Dave Bourgeois sealed this win when he completed a hat trick by scoring in an empty net as the Red Wings pressed for a tie. Other goals were scored by Jeremy Norton, Kenton LeFort and Sean Ellis. Assists went to Craig Laird, Joe Broadworth and Jay Tredway with 2 each, singles to Jay King, Chad Kearns and Sean. Game 2 pitted Port against the Parkedale (Hamilton) Panthers. After the Panthers took an early 1-0 'lead, - Port asserted themselves. Chad tied the score on a wraparound, his first of two goals; then Scott Heasman potted the winner on a brilliant end to end rush. Joe also scored a pair and Jay T. had the final goal as Port cruised to a 6-1 final. Assists in this game were earned by Scott, Dave, Chad and Matt Kingston Township's Derek Wager was named final game MVP in the Pee Wee Division after he helped his team knock of Port Perry 5-3 on Saturday afternoon at the Scu- gog. Jay T. gave Port a 1-0 lead late in the first period, assisted by Sean and Jay K.. Less than a minute later Kingston tied it up. Before the period ended Jeremy fired one from the point on assists from Sean and Craig. Early in the second, Sean col- lected his third assist as he laid a pass into the slot for Scott to move in from the point and blast into the top corner for a 3-1 Port lead. The tendency of the Kingston team not to quit turned out to be a problem for Port as they got one to get close late in the second, tied it midway through the third and then scored two in the last 2:48 to claim the championship 5-3. V ' The tournament hopefully will serve as a good tuneup for the up- coming playoff series with Cobourg as the team generally played well and were within a few missed chances of winning it all. The defense in particular, was strong both ways with Scott and Jeremy making their offensive contribution, and Matt chipping in an assist. Jay King burned in a powerful effort in his own end and drew two assists from several ex- cellent rushes. It is also to be hoped that Jay Tredway, who was forced to leave the final game with an injury, recovers quickly as he is a key cog in the Legionaires finely tuned machine. : Framers pound Emmerson 7-2 In Port Perry Broomball League action played Sunday afternoon at the Scugog Arena, the Framers went on a scoring binge to defeat Emmerson 7-2. Brian Mikkelsen led the way for Framers with a pair of goals and singles came from John Green, John Fry, Jason Cooper, Jim Weir, and Peter Kristensen. John Gerber and Dave Lawrence replied for Emmer- son. Monsma Electric suffered its first defeat in league play as Blackstock trimmed the electric gang b-2. Ron Short had a pair of markers, with other goals com- ing from Bill Pratt, Steve Halkes, and Ron Redman. Bart Wagar picked up the lone tally for Monsma. Brian Pomeroy was a one OHA Jr. iC' man wrecking crew as B and R Electric trampled Woodys 4-1. Pomreroy did all the scor- ing for the team in this one and Neil Woodrow replied for the other side. In games played Jan. 21, Blackstock trimmed B and R Electric 3-1 with Tom Wotten, Bill Pratt and Ron Short getting the goals. Scott Heard replied forBandR.
