26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 30, 1990 Busy weekend for the Eagles January 27th and 28th proved to be another fun-filled, skating- skilled weekend for our ever- improving XL Gas Barn Eaglet- tes. They played 3 games in 24 hours in Markham, Port Perry and Brooklin arenas. The girls travelled to Markham Saturday night for an exhibition game where they had the fans sit- ting on the edge of their seats. Port dominated the score with a 5-1 lead and then allowed Markham to tie it up 5-5 with 5 minutes remaining in the game. The Eaglettes decided then it was time to pour on the gas and end- ed victoriously 9-5. Congratula- tions goes to Jenny Lane who played her best game of the season. Unfortunately, Sunday's game at home against a powerful Oshawa team turned victory in- side out to read defeat. Oshawa opened the scoring with a goal midway through the first period, then our Alechia Cracknell received a nice pass from Pam Hiltz and flipped it in the net for 1-1 tie. Amanda Wakeford played an incredible game in net as she was called upon to make many outstanding saves. Our "4" Jennifers - Hammond, Lane, Donnelly and Elliot, Diane Vanderligt, Laura and Melissa Hooker and Alechia checked, passed and continuously shot on net but Oshawa's goalie, a real "cracker jack' wouldn't let any more goals in. As usual, we saw strong back and forechecking from Pam, Jan- na, Bonni-Jo and Brooke, however, Oshawa did manage to find the right spot in net two more times to win 3-1. Thanks for another nail-bitting game girls. After this performance we are sure you'll defeat Oshawa when we meet again this weekend in the Ottawa Tournament!!! Later on Sunday in Brooklin arena, we watched a game of "goal-tag." Laura, Alechia and Janine's eager checking ability in Whitby's zone delighted the fans as did the strategic passing from Amanda, Melissa and the "3" Jennifers. This resulted in a total of 11 shots coming between the pipes for a win of 11-7. Bonni-Jo, Brooke, Janna and Pam constantly played at Whit- by's blueline intercepting passes to keep the ring in scoring ter- ritory. These 4 never give up their determination and it looks like we may have some goals scored from our defense (Right Pam)? Injuries, flu take sting out of Atom scoring Playoff action continued on Monday night as Malmont Farm Atom '"A's" hosted Stouffville. This was the second contest in their round robin series with Cobourg and Stouffville. The visitors opened the scoring early in the first and forced our side to play catch-up the rest of the way. They added another, midway through the third before we got our stuff together, when Brad Shanley fired one in on a nif- ty pass from Brad Morton with less than three minutes left. The stage was set to pull the fat from the fire, as Stouffville took a penalty, giving us a man advan- tage. With the face-off in their end and our net empty, Port applied tremendous pressure in the dying seconds, but were unable to cash in. Stouffville left town content with the 2-1 victory. To add to our woes, Timmy Fitzpatrick reported to camp with one wing out of action, the result of a snowboarding incident. It looks like he's gone for the rest of the campaign and his aggressive play and booming shot will be greatly missed. On Wednesday night, the gang surfaced in Cobourg to square off against their old rivals. Port opened the scoring mid- way through the first on a fine end to end effort by Jeff Clarke. Cobourg responded with a tally in each of the last two periods to cap this squeaker. The team got a good effort from all hands but our offence continued to sputter. Special mention to Jamie Reed who had a busy night in goal when Cobourg buzzed around in our zone on occasion. On Saturday, the "Green Machine' was at home to play in their half of the annual Atom/Pee Wee tournament. In the first game against the Oshawa Bruins, our side opened up a 2-0 lead early in the first and entered the second with a 3-1 bulge. It looked as though we were finally firing on all cylinders until Oshawa mounted a come-back to tie the score at 4, going into the final frame. After a see-saw battle, Oshawa pulled ahead with 5 minutes left. This took the wind out of our sails, and the rest of the game belong- ed to the opposition as they scored 3 more times to end this one 8-4. Despite the score, these teams were evenly matched and gave supporters lots to cheer about. Scoring for the home team was Jeff Clarke with two and Kevin Gray and Tommy Chambers with one each. Assists went to Todd Parry and Jeff Clarke. The second game saw us paired up with Ajax. This was an ex- citing contest with lots of fan participation. This side opened the scoring midway through the ppener and carried that lead tintfl late in the second when Todd Parry tied it up from Tommy Chambers who dug the puck out of a scramble in front. Just when it appeared we were going to pull ahead, Ajax pumped in two to put this one out of reach. Injuries and sickness continue 9-7 de The Bruton's 1.D.A. petites had a very busy weekend of ringette beginning with a short exhibition game in front of many MoJack fans on Sat. night at the local arena. The Bruton squad divided in half and put on a display of ringette much to the enjoyment of the spectators many of whom never had seen a game prior to this. This game ended in a 0 - 0 tie as Katie Senyk and Shona Moase were up to stopping their fellow teammates. After this late night the eyes were opened early for a 6:30 a.m. practice, that is all except for one. It's okay Cindy, we heard that your dad slept in. Later on Sunday we travelled to Lindsay to play our last league game at 4:15. All prepared and fired up, the Bruton team hit the ice to face the Lindsay squad. The Port girls managed to build a 2-0 lead early in the game only to see Lindsay come back and tie before the period ended. The se- cond period started and remain- ed at a fast pace as both teams traded goals and the lead many times. As the clock clicked the seconds away Port found themselves down by two goals late in the game when they scored to climb within a goal only to see the Lind- say team come right back and get the insurance goal to fimish the EE to plague the line-up and it has had a devastating effect on both the offensive and defensive units. Jason Logan came down with the flu and his absence was felt along the blueline. Many thanks to Paul Shrigley who gave Daryl Holtby a hand in goal in the final game. This turned out to be anybody's game most of the way, but Oshawa eventually took home the hardware with a 5-2 victory. game 9 to 7 in their favour. Katie was our goalie in this afternoon game and through her own admission thought she didn't have a very good game but she had some nice saves when left to face the Lindsay sharp-shooters all alone whenever a defensive lapse occurred. Don't worry, Katie, I know you were saving yourself for Ottawa. Scoring in this game were Shona, Natasha an Dana with 1 assist each, Cindy, Lynda and Joan with 1 goal each, Cara with a goal and an assist and Brandy with 3 goals and an assist. With the hustle and desire displayed in this game I know the Bruton's team is ready to travel to Ottawa to take part in the Winterlude Ringette Tournament on Fri. Feb. 2.
