Public Speaking Contest to be held at Immaculate Conception Hall by Sherry Van Boxtel My days have been pretty busy this week, especially after being chosen (at the last minute) to do this article, as well as prepare for our third annual oral arts festival. The students from all age groups in our school have been working hard to get ready for a wide variety of oral arts, in- cluding: speeches, poems, stories, and impromptu's, which are speeches on a topic picked out a few minutes before hand by a teacher or official (talk challenging)! The students are also looking forward to (if chosen) to enter and compete in the C.W.L. public speaking contest, which is being held on February 4 at two o'clock in the Immaculate Conception Church Hall. Good luck to all the entrants! We are having a school mass on Friday, February 2 at eleven o'clock. The younger children in our school will probably help make the church look very decorative with all the beautiful artwork which they have worked very hard on in their classrooms. The older children have reading buddies from the primary grades, whom we help with their reading skills and also sit with in church. (I think the younger kids help the older kids to behave as well). Our grade eight class has been very busy making decisions this month as to which high school we will go to. By now we have each chosen one high school out of the two great choices we had: one, our very own Port Perry High School and the other Paul Dwyer Catholic High School in Oshawa. The majority of us chose Paul Dwyer, mainly because we, being confirmed Catholics, wanted a school that would continue to educate us in our faith as well as the academics. Our teacher, Mr. Hall, helped those of us going to Paul Dwyer fill out registration and option forms, while Mr. Toy helped those of us going to P.P.H.S. fill out forms last Thursday. The elementary school teachers work to rule is finally over and the girls from our grade eight classroom celebrated by playing basketball in the gym at lunch hour, for the first time since December 23. Now that work to rule is over both the juniors and seniors are looking forward to trying out for the school basketball team, as well as the Knights of Columbus free throw championship being held in our gym on January 31, at seven p.m., for all the schools in Scugog. Unfortunately the Catholic High School teachers are still on strike and we're all wondering how it will affect us too, because with no teachers at the school, who is go- ing to process our registration and option forms if the strike lasts for a long time? The grade sevens and eights are going skating for Phys. Ed. at the Scugog Arena and for a few lucky people, who got to go skating with the grade ones and twos last week this will be their second skating week in a row. The grade sevens have just finished their projects on North American Indians, and now that work to rule is over, their lucky teacher Mr. Evangelista can devote all of his spare time to marking them. The grade sixes are beginning human development in family life, which they probably find very interesting to learn about, and they are planning yet another fun gym period with Mr. Justin- ski's class from R.H. Cornish. Mrs. Calder's Senior Kindergarten class had fun in Phys. Ed. last week sliding at the hill. The kindergarten class is also learning their alphabet and mak- ing finger puppets to go with the poems they are working on. Probably the most popular guy in the whole school, Garth Hoare, comes to visit our classes regular- ly and the kids get to work with him. Heather Davis is one of the lucky people who gets to work with Garth ahd she and Mrs. Gilbank play concentration with him regularly. Heather admits, "I'm getting quite good at Con- centration now." Garth has also been going swimming on Thursdays. What a lucky guy! Mrs. Roche and Mrs. McCourt, who are the special education teachers at our school, are using woodworking and small ap- pliances with their students, and are looking for donations of ir- reparable, used household ap- pliances such as irons, kettles, coffee makers etc. They also say they are looking forward to cook- ing with their students again. I hope they remember that grade 8's are growing children and need all the nutritious calories they can get. Crystal and Shannon Hill, who enjoyed an extra long holiday in sunny Florida, two weeks into school, finally came back with tans to make almost anyone en- vious! I only wish I could be so lucky! In a way I am lucky, being able to write this article for you. I hope you enjoyed reading it, just as much as I enjoyed writing it. Goodbye! Her home was destroyed by fire on Sunday after- noon. Some of Ruth's good neighbours made and served hot coffee and sandwiches to the hard working firemen and helpers. This is how good friends respond to such a terrible misfortune in our small village. Thank you ladies! ! Students from Greenbank and Espom Schools made a field trip to Claremont Conservation. All the pupils had a great time and do enjoy these field trips, a real lear- ning experience! The January meeting of our Women's Institute held at the home of Velma Foster proved to be most interesting. Mr. Douglas Heard of Whitby who is President of the Alzheimers Society of Durham Region was the guest speaker. He answered so many questions that everyone has about this terrible life threatening il- Iness. He told us 300,000 Cana- dians are afflicted with 10,000 deaths each year. We really en- joyed a reading by Shirley Lee en- titled 'Old Folks." Mr. and Mrs. Jack McGauley of Wasaga Beach were Sunday guests of Don & Helen McKean as well as granddaughter Kim Taylor of Whitby.
