The By-law states that the Township of Scugog has re- ceived many complaints with respect to the abuse and use of snowmobiles, more particular- ly in the urban area of Port Perry over the last couple of years. It also states that the Snow- mobile Club has agreed to as- sist the Township of Scugog in controlling its own sport. For this to be possible it is neces- sary to appoint the wardens of the Club for the purposes of laying charges under the By- aw. The By-law names 23 indi- viduals that are appointed As- sistant By-law Enforcement Of- ficers for the Township of Scugog for the purposes of this By-law and a By-law to regu- late snowmobiles in the Town- ship. According to Administrator Earl Cuddie complaints have not been as numerous this year. OVER 20 YEARS EXPERIENCE RR4, UXBRIDGE Durham No. 23, just s. of 47 416/852-7722 PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 30, 1990 -- 3 Snowmobile club wardens will become assistant bylaw officers He stated police have made 12 charges, three of which were curfew related, and two crimi- nal charges. He added he was not sure if the need is there for the wardens, if there is no real problem. a He continued by saying that Apple Valley has been much better than previous years, that there have only been com- laints about one person driv- ing on the sidewalks. There have not been a large number of complaints about snowmobiles on Queen, and 7A, he said. Representatives have been at the local High School inform- ing the students about what they can and cannot legally do. This may be one reason that the complaints have beenJimited. What the wardens will be able to dois lay charges for side- walk offences, and curfew relat- ed incidents. A snowmobiler may not oper- ate a snowmobile along any sidewalk in Scugog, except when in the act of crossing over such a sidewalk and such cross- ing shall be done at an angle of approximately 90 degrees to the direction of the sidewalk. The curfew in Port Perry and Prince Albert is that no snow- mobile shall be operated in the Township between the hours of one o'clock a.m., and seven o'clock a.m. If a snowmobiler breaks these rules, wardens of the Snowmobile Club, as well as the local police, have the au- thority to lay charges under the By-law. Council decided that the war- dens may not be required often, but because they keep in touch, and are sincerely interested about the reputation of their sport, they would be deputized.
