Ms. Hall uses many different mediums to create a wide varlety of art forms. She is pictured above with a "silly foam" picture. Dennice Hall's creative mas- terpieces can be hung on a wall, worn as a fashion statement or walked all over. The Caesarea-area artist is exhibiting some of her work at the Scugog Memorial Library until Feb. 23. Ms. Hall spoke to the Port Perry Star during the exhibit's openingon Saturday. "TI really like to experiment with materials," Ms. Hall ex- plained. That statement is evident when viewing her often colorful and imaginative work. Most of the artist's wall hang- ings are done in bold pastel col- ors, but she does not limit her- self to that scheme. ] Ms. Hall admits that she "likes to play" and this trait is shown in her "silly foam" pic- tures. She discovered a non- toxic foam used to fill in cracks and now uses it on some of her art to give the pieces a three- dimensional appearance. Ms. Hall started her career as a painter, but has expanded to include sculpting, print mak- ing, and fabric painting. "I started as a two- dimensional artist and never had any interest or skill for sculpture," she told the Star. But some of her most noted works to date are her sculptures made from gauze, linen or tis- sue mache. Moon Man, a life- sized man with a moon head, was her first sculpture and most popular. Ms. Hall also has on display a variety of animal sculptures. She also uses a variety of me- diums when creating earrings and hair clips. Paper, wood, canvas and gems are used to create attractive and light- weight accessories. Ms. Hall, her husband and her sister manufactured the popular jewelry for several years. Their products were available in about 1,800 stores across Canada. "We did well," Ms. Hall com- mented, "but the competition was fierce." "All of our jewelry was hand- made," and it was difficult to keep up with large automated firms, she said. Ms. Hall also creates floor art, using canvass and paints. The beautifully crafted area mats look like old fashion linoli- um and are completely washa- ble and durable. The only prob- lem is people think the floor mats are too nice to walk on, Ms. Hall said. She is also working on maps of Canada. The maps look simi- lar to the floor art but are used as runners for coffee tables or can be hungon the wall. A map of Scugog Township, complete with legend, local his- tory and folklore, will be auc- tioned at an upcoming event for the Hospital Fund, Ms. Hall said. The "Make Me Crazy" exhibit at the public library is Ms. Hall's first local show. Admis- sion is free. The exhibit is open during regular library hours.
