Over the past weekend, there were 11 girls who travelled to Ot- tawa, to take part in the Winterlude tournament. This was the first time it had been opened up to Provincial teams, and the Port Tweens came home with se- cond place and a silver medal out of 8 cities entered. The Provincial A Tweens, spon- sored by Allens Siding Products, found that 11 was heaven, but 9 was fine, as Tracy Pelow sprain- ed her ankle before the first game, and Michelle Fitzpatrick got put out of the third game at noon Saturday when she took out a girl in front of her net, and the girl fell on Michelles ankle. She had to be carried off and despite ice packs and tender loving care, she could not return. Also in this game, Kim Pop- pleton twisted her ankle, but for- tunately, she was able to hang in and keep our numbers at 9 which was the minimum required. Kims skating slowed down but if you were in range of her stick, look out. Then to top everything off, dur- ing the first game on Friday even- ing, Shannon Fox went heavily in- to the boards, her knee locked up on her and she could not finish the game, but was in high gear again on Saturday merning. There were some very proud parents as these wounded war- riors started off Friday evening with a 7-3 win over Cumberland which is near Ottawa, then Greens Creek Saturday 5-3, and a tie with Ottawa 3-3 at noon. In the Ottawa game we had a lead of 3-0 with 4 minutes left, but 2 unfortunate and questionable penalties put us at a disadvantage and they came back with one and then tied it with one minute left. This left us with only one thing to do on Sunday morning. We had to win big against Fredericton New Brunswick, and that we did, 9-0. This placed the girls in first place by virtue of most goals and we returned at 2:00 p.m. to face off against Gloucester for the gold and silver medals. Gloucester counted first, but we tied shortly after, and even tied it at 2-2, but Gloucester notched one more to end the first period 3-2. It was evident part way through the second period that casualties and fatigue were starting to take their toll, and the end result was as earlier stated, but on the whole it was a very close match between 2 good clubs. All of our proud girls received silver medals in front of a large contingent of Port Perry fans and some support from the Nepean fans and some support from the Nepean fans. Throughout all 5 games, we received some great support from 2 of our players who split the goaltending duties, Karen Kett and Amy Parliament. The girls had a combined 'goals against' average of 3.2 and we thank them very much for sharing these duties and helping their team in a big way. While playing out, Karen had 2 goals and 3 assists and Amy had 4 assists. A big "get well" to Michelle who had 2 assists and playing ex- tremely strong on defense. Also, thank you to Kim who had the strength and determination to stay in there and help her team on defense, even though she could hardly walk on her foot. Get well soon Kim and thanks for 4 assists. Shannon Fox also did a fine job, both on forward and defense and in the last 2 games, she went from one stick to another and had very few rests. She picked up 2 goals and 4 assists. Jennifer Morden got back into better form this weekend and had a very strong outing. During the last 2 games, her only rests were during penalties and she had to play the last minutes of the Satur- day noon game when Michelle and Kim were sidelined. She also helped in setting up 3 goals. Nice work Jen. Megan Marlowe exploded with 9 goals and 1 assist and was very hard to beat when the opposition tried to move in. Her determina- tion was a big help to the defense and goalies. Lyndsay Dutkewich returned in a big way with 8 goals and no assists. Numerous times, she broke up big plays by diving for the ring and tipping it. Tammy Pillman had a great weekend as she helped her team with 1 goal and 4 assists. Tammy continues to improve and is show- ing that size isn't everything, but a few extra pounds would come in handy at times. PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 6, 1990 -- 31 Tweens win the silver medals in Ottawa Amanda Webb was a work horse this weekend as she never stopped, picking up 1 goal and 9 assists. Her toughness along the boards continues to impress everyone. It was a fine weekend of ringette as the girls played extra hard to fill in the holes caused by injuries. They held off some of the toughest competition so far this year and put their fans on the edge of the seats constantly. Don't ever count these girls out. A good weekend was had by the parents, travelling one-way streets, looking for restaurants, ice packing ankles, trying to beat the parking attendant, learning new steps to ballroom dancing and playing goundhog while try- ing to find the Delta Inn, underground. Once all ankles are mended, wp back as these girls are on a roll. Construction boys journey north Van Camp Construction of the Novice House League, travelled to Haliburton for a 2 day tournament.
