TT RE i 32 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 6, 1990 Bantams -Cobourg in barn burner series Blades Bantams have moved into the second round of the playoffs on a rather highnote as they are playing the rival Cobourg in a best 3 out of 5. Folks, this series has turned out to be a beauty, and the series stands 1-1. Port travels to Cobourg tonight to tangle with the Cougars in game number 3 of the series. Should be a barn-burner. The Goreski Insulation Bantam No. 1's sponsored by Goreski In- sulation played game one last Tuesday night, Jan. 30, and came out with the short end of the hockey stick, taking a 5-4 loss to Cobourg at the "barn."" Larocque got the call to play in net on this night and saw a lot of rubber as Cobourg's arsenal came out load- ed. Shawn came up with some enormous saves near the end of regulation time when the game got important as Port scored twice to cut the lead to a 5-4 hockey game. Cobourg got on the gamesheet first, as it was 1-0 Cobourg. Then 1:41 seconds after Cobourg Atoms knocked out On Friday night the Malmont Farm Atom A's travelled to Stouffville in a last ditch effort to earn the right to challenge Cobourg in the second round of post season play. This was a must win game for our guys and they came out smokin'. The first five minutes were full of good opportunities as we had Stouffville on the ropes. Their goalie came up big on numerous occasions, giving the home team time to gain their composure. Midway through the first, Stouff- ville opened the scoring on a fine rush by their captain. Early in the second he did it again to put us in deep, deep doo doo.. Their third unanswered goal was scored with just 4 minutes left before the second buzzer to allow them to take a comfortable lead into the final period. Kevin Gray was finally able to get us on the hoard on a pretty goal assisted by Daryl McEnaney. At about this time it was ap- parent that we were just about out of gas. The coaching staff was just not able to wring any more out of the two forward lines and four defencemen. Gritty performances from for- ward Tommy Chambers, Brad Morton, Todd Parry, Kevin Gray, Daryl McEnaney and Kent Johnston were not enough to over- come a 3 goal deficit on this night. Defencemen Jason Logan, Jeff Clarke, Mike Heasman and Rob Murphy had their hands full all night long trying to contain Stouff- ville's relentless attack. Jamie and Daryl Holtby shared netmin- ding duties and were busy as well. We are now free to take on any and all challenges in exhibition play. scored, it was J. Parry who teed one top shelf where Norman Bates keeps his grandmother. Assisting on this beauty goal were J. Cochrane and Traynor. It seemed as though the game would go back and forth as Cobourg scored once more. The score was now 2-1. Port's game plan as you should know by now, is the dump and chase, especially on small ponds. Cobourg is a good exa. ' 'le of this. They were also suppc Jd to play their bump and grind st, le in order to keep Cobourg's defence on their toes. Port then scored once more before the end of the first frame as Pashley bumped in the corner, took his man out of the play and popped one home, top corner. Nice hustle Dave. Helping out Pashley on this play were Moase and Empringham. The first frame had concluded, and Port came out in the second slack as Cobourg scored twice to make the hockey game 4-2. The third period showed good things as Port came out flying as they wanted game one. Cobourg scored 4 minutes in to make it 5-4 but Port never gave up, they were all over the Cougars from this point.on. At the 10:48 mark in was McBride who scored on a break-away while short handed. He put 'er through the five hole to bulge twine. Assists to Logan and G. Cochrane. G. Cochrane was the one who sent him in as he ripped one off the boards. It was now 5-3 and Port Repeat gold for Juniors Port Perry I.G.A Juniors travelled to Ottawa's Winterlude and brought home the Gold for the second year. With a team effort by all the girls Port just kept rolling. The combination of good goaltending, hard working defence and quick skating for- wards made Port a hard team to beat. Port Perry 1.G.A. played their first game Saturday against Ne- pean, a team that had beaten Port in a previous tournament, but with seven seconds left in the game Port put one past the goalie and won 5-4. Our second game Saturday evening against Cumberland, saw the girls playing with an effort not yet seen this year. Port's passing, shooting & ring control was too much for the opposing team as the girls played for their second victory by the score of 10-6. The game had it's moments but Port would not be denied the victory for a shot at a gold medal by winning all three games in the round robin. Port Perry's unbeaten streak, along with Dollard Quebec also finishing with 6 points, had the makings of a hard fought game. The Port Perry girls came to play right from the opening whis- tle and by the end of the first period the score was 4-2 for Port Perry 1.G.A.. This left one more period of ringette to decide whether Port could do it or not. Port Perry's control of the game in the second period along with unbelievable ring control proved too much for Dollard, a highly rated team. With an unrivaled team effort, Port Perry played for the win and came home with the gold by the score of 7-5. The twelve hard working girls that put it all together for Port Perry are as follows: Kathy Napper 1 assist, great goaltending; the defense of Jennifer Hunter, 5 assists; Mandee Porter, 5 assists; Melanie Dunne, 1 assist; and Laurie Thompson, 1 assist, good defensive plays. The forwards of Denna Lover- ing, 11 goals, 5 assists; Kristin Armstrong, 6 goals, 9 assists; Jennifer King, 5 goals, 4 assists; Valerie Payne, 2 goals, 4 assists; Danielle Lally, 2 goals, 2 assist; Jo Ann Zaal, 2 goals, 2 assists, and Kendra McCrae 1 goal, 2 assists proved themselves. A pat on the back to the coaching staff of Paul Pelow, Janice Lovering and Todd Pop- pleton. Congratulations to the other four Port Perry teams that participated in the Winterlude tournament. As was best said by an Ottawa parent, Port Perry puts together some good teams! Our next game girls is the Pickering tournament Saturday, Feb. 10 at 9:30 a.m., at Don Beer Arena. See you there! had the adrenaline. With 1:16 left in regulation time, Port pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker. It was Laird who snapped one home off arebound and it was 5-4 and there was enough time left to cash another home. Assists to McBride and Parry. Port had chances in the final seconds but couldn't cash one home as Cobourg took game one 5-4. Blades was pretty happy with what he saw near the end as his team showed hustle and offence but lacked this throughout the earlier stages of the game. Their speciality teams shined in this one. Port would take their offensive flare into game two which was played the next night in Port. Port dominated this game along the boards and in the corners as they came out physical and fast. They didn't lack hustle on this night. Larocque got the call to play in net and "Shawn" like a new dime while stoning the Cobourg offence. Cobourg did not look like the team one night earlier. Port out played them from start to finish. Lovely! Port got going first in this game, and never looked back as they beat Cobourg 6-2. Game two belonged to the turtles! McBride found the back of the net at the 9:18 mark as he had another breakaway. He made no mistake as he drilled it - 5 hole. Assists to Logan and G. Cochrane. This was a fas tempo game with lots of body checking and Port rose to the occasion. With :12 seconds left, it was J. Cochrane who was sent in on a partial breakaway as their defenseman pinched in. Laird and Traynor did the work which sent J. Cochrane in where he ripped a 15 foot slapsheot - stick side. Folks, that shot got a speeding ticket on the way to the net, as it was do- ing 75 km in a 50 zone. The score after 2 periods was Port 2 - Cobourg no score.. The third period set the stage for a saturated Cobourg net as Port put 4 pucks by the Cobourg stopper. Cobourg scored twice to make it 2-2. Then it was Port's turn. It was Laird who ripped one, top corner, over the goalies shoulder while short handed, with the assists to J. Cochrane and Vander Slagt. Then it was McBride who scored his second of the night as he blew one by the goalie. He never saw it folks! Logan and Vanderligt draw the assists. Cobourg threw in the second string goalie but that didn't mat- ter as Port scored twice more. It was Laird who slid one by the goalie as he had the whole left side. Assisting on Laird's second of the night were Parry and J. Cochrane on a beautiful 3 way passing play. Then for the icing on the cake, J. Cochrane had to score as the left side of the cake lacked icing. Traynor dumped one behind the Cobourg net, where Laird was standing. He heard J. Cochrane and we all heard twine as he chip- ped it by the goaltender. Port went on to win game 2 by a 6-2 count. Good hustle team! Blades was impressed with our play and likes what he sees. Port's specialty teams have im- proved and the team has scored some goals on the powerplay and while short-handed. Port's next home game is tomorrow night as they play game 4 at 9:15 p.m.. Be there to catch some great hits, goals, and coaching. There's lots of seats to fill, as the turtles love the fans. See you at 9:15 tomorrow. Nice work, boys On February 3 and 4 the Scala Bros. Pee Wee's travelled to Haliburton to play in the 'Haliburton Minor Hockey Tri- County" tournament. Action began on Saturday with a game against host team Haliburton. The action was fast and furious, with Haliburton edging out a close 2-1 victory. Sean Gawley scored the lone goal for Scala with an assist from Matt Phoenix. Kyle Simms distinguished himself in nets, and was rewarded for his brilliant play with the M.V.P. award for the Scala side. In the evening contest, Scala kept their trophy hopes alive with a resounding 6-0 victory over Wilberforce. Once again Sean Gawley and Matt Phoenix led the way scoring two goals a piece. Singles went to Chris Drury, scor- ing his first goal as a Pee Wee, OHA Jr. 'C' PLAYOFFS at SCUGOG ARENA and Graham Holt. In addition to his two goals Sean Gawley pick- ed up 3 assists in this game, Mark Dunn and Trevor Smith had two each, while Gavin Carnegie, Tony Waldriff, Matt Phoenix, Sean Sauter, and Eric Vetter picked up singles. Gavin Carnegie's solid performance on defence won him the M.V.P. award for Scala. On Sunday morning with still a chance to reach the finals, Scala took on a solid Minden team. Despite controlling play throughout the first period, Scala fell behind midway through the game and was never able to recover. The final score was Minden 5 Scala 1. Sean Sauter scored Scala's goal on an assist from Chris Drury. Matt Phoenix received the M.V.P. for Scala. Despite a disappointing end to the tournament, our boys played with poise and character, and represented Port Perry well. > od C "C Port Perry MoJacks $ Ajax Axemen VS.
