34 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 6, 1990 . Petites push Pembrecke to double overtime Port Perry Bruton's 1.D.A. Petites ventured to Ottawa last weekend for the annual Winterlude tournament. The Bruton's Petites first game against Pembroke began with each of the Port Perry Lines put- ting pressure on their opponents. Port Perry carried the play through much of the first period, but could not solve the mystery of the Pembroke defence. Pembroke made the most of their oppor- tunities as they jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the end of the first period. Despite an excellent effort by all of the girls the Pembroke lefence remained impenetrable. This defence forced shots from poor angles which the Pembroke goalie was able to block. With 9:26 remaining in the game and the Port girls down 2-0, coach Harris called his time out hoping to regroup his team. The girls con- tinued their domination of the play but Pembroke stretched their lead to 3-0. With Port press- ing to get back in the game Pem- broke again made the best of their opportunities scoring the final goal of the game to make it a 4-0 defeat to out Petites. The girls showed their sport- smanship as they saluted the PPHS hosts rugby finals If you like rugby, or want to know more about this popular sport, Port Perry will be the Place to be on May 31 and June The sixteen top senior high school rugby teams in Ontario will be in Port Perry those two days for the provincial (OFS- SA)championships. Pembroke giris with a victory arch with their sticks as they left the ice. After the Pembroke game, coach Harris told the girls that they needed to play smarter if they were to be successful. Hav- ing overnight to think about this, the team came out storming the Ottawa I net. Natasha opened the scoring at the end of the first shift of the game with assists from Joan and Linda. On the next shift Dana extended the lead with Lin- da agains getting the assist. Ot- tawa made the game close but after a line change Brandy con- tinued the onslaught 10 seconds after the Ottawa goal with a pass from Shona. The turning point in the game was the killing of a dou- ble penalty halfway through the first period. The period ended with Port ahead 3-1. From this point Port put the game away. The final tally for the game was 14-2 with Brandy leading the scoring parade with 4 goals, Joan with 3 goals, 2 assists; Natasha and Linda with 2 goals, 3 assists each; Dana 2 goals, 2 assists; Cindy 1 goal, 1 assist; Melissa P. 3 assists; Shona 2 assists, with single assists to Jen- ny, Lea-Anne, Cara and Melissa The Bruton's Petites continued their domination into their third game, this time, against Rockcliffe. Early pressure and good fore-checking resulted in the Brandy, Cara and Michelle line establishing Ports' superiority. Brandy scored twice with Cara Pee Wees split The Scugog Overhead Doors Pee Wee No. 2 team had to settle for a win and a loss this week in playoff action. On Monday Port played the team from Peterboro and lost 7-1. Port's lone goal was scored in the second period when Brent Harper was on the receiving end from the face-off and sent it back to Ian Shrigley. Ian sent the puck flying and Jason Phillips deflected it in. Port put this game into the back of their minds and headed for Bowmanville on Sat., set their goals high and came home vic- torious by a score of 4-2. Port took an early lead after a scramble in front of Bowman- ville's net and somehow Daryl Bourgeois getting the puck through a mass of players and in- to the net. Assist went to Brent Harper. Port lost no time in the opening minutes of the second period when Daryl and Brent teamed up again to get the puck to Jeremy Geer who snuk it through the goalies legs making the score 2-0. Bowmanville finished off the scoring in the second and got the third period opener thus tying the - game up. That was until the awesome line of Daryl, Brent and Jeremy got into action again and gave Port the go ahead goal with the honours going to Daryl. Great team work guys. Some new blood took over for our insurance goal. Rick Olaisen in the corner sent the puck to the front of the net to Jason Phillips. Jason let a shot go and it hit the goalie in the face mask, the puck dropped to a waiting Sandy Mark and he tapped it in. Right place, right time eh guys? Port has one game left in the round-robin playoffs this Friday night at 9:15. Be there!! and Linda adding singles while Rockcliffe netted 1 against the ever steady Katie at the end of the first period. Sheila demonstrating her strongest and most ag- gressive play-to-date set the tone for the rest of the game as Port scored in bunches enroute to a 11-2 romp. Linda, Cara and Bran- dy each had hat tricks, with Man- dy and Cindy rounding out the scoring. Michelle led the set ups with 4 assists, Dana had 2, Shona, Jenny, Joan and Mandy with singles each. With two victories and 1 defeat Port Perry advanced to the Bronze medal game with a chance to avenge their earlier less against Pembroke who were also 2-1. Port started the game skating and passing at a pace which Pembroke hadn't seen, resulting with Joan and Shona setting up Brandy for an early Port lead. As the period con- tinued, Pemborke took the play to Port, as telegraphed passes clos- ed the passing lanes and without the exceptional goaltending of Katie the game would have been out of reach. The first period end- ed in a 1-1 tie. Early in the second frame, the strong skating and passing of Pembroke opened a 3-1 lead. Joan assisted by Cindy got 1 back tor Port and then on a power play, Brandy from Cara and Shona, tied the score. Brandy getting her third, this time from Linda and Cara with only 3:58 remaining, gave Port the lead, as the physical Pembroke team took another penalty. The lead was shortplived however as Pem- broke evened the match with 2:00 minutes left to play and the game went into overtime. At this point, Coach Harris was going with his best, but Pembroke got a break and went ahead 54. Cindy on a sterling effort, sent the contest in- to double overtime with only 27 seconds remaining. In a game that could have gone either way, the opposition managed the next goal and the girls had to settle for fourth. Congratulations to all the girls, as Pembroke having learned a lesson about Sportsmanship, gave our team a victory arch to show their appreciation of a game well played. The Bruton's Petites will have to continue to play with this inten- sity if they are to be victorious in the upcoming Mariposa tourna- ment which they begin in Oakwood Feb. 14. Tweens display plenty of spirit Pineridge Sports Tween C met their first opposition against Marham. Even though the score was 9-4, this was no indication of how hard this game was fought. Our defence was superb and should be proud of how they played. Congratulations to Dean- na Dempsey who got her first hat trick, assisting on two of these goals were Marcie Zuly and Lea Kinnunen. Our fourth goal came from Lea Kinnunen who gave 110 percent. Sarah Coyne showed us some of her excellent goal saving. This sport is definitely a team effort and this team should be com- mended for that. Our second game, 6-3, was fought just as hard against Cyr- ville. This team was playing their BONDED first game and we were playing our second. Leaving some of our defences down, they were able to come out the winner. Scoring for Port were Marcie Zuly, who put in two beautiful goals. Working very hard for our- 3rd goal from Heather Lally - just a lovely goal. Assisting for Marcie was Lea on both goals. Assisting for Heather was Julie Ball. Having to play 3 games in one day did not help number 3 game, by this time we were out for a good skate. Scoring for us were Heather Lally, who put in a lovely goal, Marcie Zuly gave us her 3rd goal for the day, assisting was Lea on two goals and Julie Ball on the other. Good work girls.
