12 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 13, 1990 Letters to the editor ack Talk THE "DREADED" SNOWMOBILERS Over the post weeks | have heard several complaints from members of this community about "the dreaded snowmobil- ers", and about ice huts on Lake Scugog. I've heard many suggestions from these people as to solu- tions to the problems. My difficulty with this is | do not see that the problem is so bad that it needs to be fixed. Just for the record, no | do not own a snowmobile, | just do not feel the people who do are a nuisance. Some people feel that snowmobiles should be totally banned from the Port Perry area. Some feel that ice fisher- man should take their fish hut off the lake every night. C'mon folks", get serious. No snowmobiles in Port Perry. This is a sport that is enjoyed by the young and old alike, it has been a winter activity for decades. It is not a ritual per- formed only by those under 25, as many seem to believe. A "responsible" adult is just as common a sight, as a teen-ager sledding through the snow. Snowmobiliers are out there for fun, and excitement. They are not roaring up and down the lake to see just how misera- ble they can make the non-participators. Okay, so there is only a small number of you who want the snowmobiles totally banned. Another large portion of the com- munity, want the snowmobiles restricted to the lake. They believe this will cut down on the noise. The problem with this solution is these snowmobilers are expected to pack up their snowmobile in their truck or trailer, and drive down to the lake where they will once again unload, and load upon re- turning home? What about the younger snowmobilers who do not have a car, are they to give up their passion for snowmobiling? The thing | find most disturbing about this solution is, if all these people are to drive to the lake to unload their machines, | can only imagine the nightmare of traffic congestion along the waterfront. Now are these people making this suggestion the same ones who complain about the traffic in downtown Port Perry? I've heard people say "there must be 200 snowmobiles on the lake on a nice Saturday afternoon." If this solution was the one to the "problem", that would mean for each snowmobile on the lake, there would be one truck, and one trailer per snowmobile clogging the waterfront. Just what downtown Port Perry needs, 200 trucks and trailers parked by the lake. Is the traffic not bad enough? English defenders branded racist (From page 7) as racists. Senator Lowell Murray, in the latest fray, says Peterson didn't know what he's talking about and should do his home- work. Murray said Ottawa has given $60 million to Ontario French Services and the Mul- roney government is spending $1.4 billion on French. What is known is that Ottawa is already spending $500 million per year on French. Total cost to the na- tion so far could be $11.5 billion. Now wonder we are facing a new seven per cent GST. There are no cuts in French ser- vices, while the debt is a monu- mental $34,000 per household. Since Peterson came to power in 1985, he has intro- duced 32 new tax increases. When questioned about the cost of the French Language Services Act ($50 million) he re- plied "it's only peanuts." He's riding the back of On- tario tax payers in this quest to become Prime Minister. He takes $60 million from people earning less than $10,000. Yet there is little money for hospi- tals, housing and vital services. More and more taxes, like education, for example, are be- ing shifted to the local property owners. The Ont. sales tax on top of the GST makes a total of 16.08 per cent. A number of people who study the matter are firmly con- vinced there is a political con- spiracy from within to make Canada a French state. As former Trudeau secre- tary of state Serge Joyal said "everyting we undertake to make Canada a French state is part of a venture I have shared with a number of people." All the political hacks not in the Senate or without patron- age plum jobs are jumping on the save the Meech sideshow. The latest CTV poll says Meech won't satisfy Quebec (68 per cent say that) The rest of Canada is fed up with the never ending demands of Quebec. The constitution nightmare is all smoke and mir- rors: a power struggle for Que- bec. Britain has no constitution. The most free and democratic country on earth says it doesn't need one. For centuries people have stood up in Hyde Park and spoke on whatever they like in whatever language they choose. More and more Canadians are saying "we are made as hell and we are not going to take any more. Mulroney has rating of 22 per cent support in the polls and Peterson is falling. We are fed up with dictato- rial laws by edict, where the vot- ers have noinput. All three national parties are the same once they get in of- fice.
