28 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 13, 1990 Gold medals for R.H. Cornish 2 The R.H. Cornish Girls Bas- ketball Team captured a gold and a silver medal in two recent tournaments On January 27, the girls won the silver medal at the Northern Classic Basketball Tournament held at Thorah Public School. The following week-end, Feb- ruary 3 and 4, the girls played in the Whitby Invitational Tournament. This was a large tournament featuring 24 teams from differ- ent schools. Cornish played well defeat- ing all four teams they faced on Friday night and Saturday, which placed them in the cham- pionship game. R.H. Cornish defeated Leslie McFarlane Public School by a score of 28-10, to capture the gold medal in the tournament. During the tounament the girls out scored their opposition by 100 points; 177-717. The Cornish girls now have a record of 16 wins, and only one loss. They are now eagerly await- ing the Collingwood Tourna- ment which takes place on February 23 and 24. The M.V.P. for Cornish was Shawna Cornish, who received a pair of Adidas Running Shoes for her efforts. Pineridge team wins first 12-1 The playoffs have just begun and the Pineridge Sports Tweens C Ringette team chalked up a big victory over the Omemee girls Sunday night, 12-1. Omemee tried their best to get more goals past goalie Sarah Coyne, but she showed terrific goalie skills and determination plus. Good work, Sarah! Coach Dan Lally had the team playing different positions in the second half, much to everyone's delight. Parents sat in the bleachers cheering the girls on but the tweens also brought their own cheering section, comprised of Amy Parliament, Lindsay Pat- ton, Sara Cosway, Dana McCullough and Amanda Webb. If any team ever needs en- couragement then get this 'chorus line"' to give you support 'cause they can sure yell and motivate everyone in the arena! Jenna, one of our first year girls, played her best yet. Your turn, Jenna, for a goal is next week. The final goal was scored by Amanda on an assist by Kyla. Leea Kinnunen gave the game her usual 110 percent. Contributing to the winning score were Deanna Dempsey - 2 goals, 2 assists; Lisa Dodd - 2 goals, 1 assist; Heather Lally - 1 goal, 3 assists; Marci Zuly - 1 goal, 1 assist; Kyla McCrae - 1 goal, 1 assist; Julie Ball, 1 goal, 1 assist; Vicki Stainton - 3 goals, one being unassisted; Amanda Clouthier with one goal and Jean- nie Templeman with 2. assists. The girls are on a roll now and play Manvers this Saturday even- ing at 6:30. Come on out and cheer the team on. Pineridge Sports Tweens - go for game number Two. See you on the ice! Cougars win B Division The R. H. Cornish Boys Bas- ketball Team captured the B- division championship in the Kinsmen-Reebok tournament held in Oshawa. This tournament consisted of over 30 teams, and is the larg- est of its kind in Ontario It is convened by Durham Athletic President Jon Patte from Prin- gle Creek. Cornish lost its opening game to Rolling Meadows, a team from Mississauga, by a score of 29-20. This loss placed Cornish in the B division. From here Cor- nish went on to defeat Gandat- setiagon 40-27, and Sunset Heights 31-20. This placed the boys in the final match where they defeated Leslie McFarlane by a score of 23-14 to give them the championship. All team members played very well according to coach Rob Smart, and a special men- tion goes to Gary Norton who was selected MVP of the B- division. The Cornish team was also pleased with the Reebok basketballs they each received for winning the division. The following players were named to the divisional all star team: Gary Norton, R.H. Cor- nish, Jason Blythe, Pringle Creek, Dave Lylyk, Leslie McFarlane, Cameron Sanders, Dr. Robert Thornton, and Jon Diamond, Dr. S.J. Phillips. The Reebok A division cham- ions were a team from Waver- y Public School, and are the team to beat this year in Dur- ham.
