PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 13, 1990 -- 37 Al Yanks grab most of the prizes at Racing Series Racers from south of the border took home the lion's share of the cash and trophies in the Canadian World Series of Snowmobile Drag Racing held over the weekend on Lake Scu- 80g. « Top individual prize money of $1,000 went to Brian Beli- man of Bremen Indiana for his first place points finish in the "open fuel" class. About 150 racers took part in the two days of competitions on Kent's Bay, including the best from Canada and the States. The four-lane track of 1/8 mile pitted drive against driver, not the clock. And these highly modified snow sleds hit speeds in excess of 100 MPH from a standing start over the 1/8 mile. The World Series was sanc- tioned by the Central Ontario Snowmobile Darg Racers Assoc. Secretary treasurer Au- drey Hall of Port Perry, said lat- er organizers were pleased with the way things went on the weekend, though darkness on Sunday forced several heats to be scrubbed. Organizers said there is no accurate way of counting the number of spectators, but esti- mates put the crowd at several thousand. Indeed, the surface of the ice looked like a small village for the weekend with hundreds of vehicles parked in the pit area and along the track. And what is believed to be a first for this kind of racing, com- puters were used to keep track of winners. A special program for the races was designed by Uxbridge businessmen Ron Beach and Bruce Phillips. Late last week, there were concerns about the mild weath- er, but the temperature had dropped by the weekend, and firmed up the two feet of ice on Kent's Bay. Ms. Hall told the Star she is grateful for the support from the Port Perry Snowmobile Club, Scugog Township which paid to prepared and groom the track and two local businesses, Trader Sams and Country Style Donuts, for sponsorship. Mr. Hall said that net pro- ceeds from sale of World Series souvenier buttons would be turned over the local hospital. The only serious incident during the two days of racing Acceleration at the starting line lifts the front of this sled Into the air. From standing start, these machines hit speeds over 100 MPH on the 1/8 mile track. took place Saturday. Racer Mark Gardella of New Hampshire had just com- pleted a heat when a belt broke on his machine. He veered left onto the re- turn track and was struck by a four wheel drive ATC driven by Darrin Parwey of Michigan. Parwey was moving about 16 MPH and was not able to stop in time to avoid hitting the racer, who suffered a double fractureoftheleg.
