Janet Banting is their guest speaker talking on the advan- tages of recycling for a better Kindergarten class learns to milk cows Last Friday's Winter Carnival at the Christian School had to be cancelled due to lack of snow. We hope to be able to go ahead with this fun-filled afternoon as soon as the weather is suitable. The World Book Reading Pro- gram is going very well. Grades 1 & 2 have read an average of 6.2 books in the last 2 weeks; Grades 3,4&5: 4.6 books; Grades 6,7 & 8: 5.3 books. Excellent work so far! We still have five weeks to go. The kindergarten class has been enjoying their Food Unit, especially the trip to the diary farm a week from last Friday. After seeing how the cows and calves were fed and milked, Mrs. Powell treated the kids to a snack of milk products; cartons of chocolate milk and several kinds of cheese with crackers. On Mon- day, the school nurse gave a lit- tle talk on a well-balanced diet and good eating habits. The children are checking their lunch pails for "vitamins." Also, they have sampled food from Italy, Mexico and China. Last week was "Q" week for the kindergarten class, and they learned '"'O Canada' and talked about our country and our Queen. In French, they learned a little song about the days of the week. Miss Dupre, our Grade 1 & 2 teacher, has been absent for several days due to illness; our prayers and thoughts are with her in her absence. The class is car- rying on though, under the guidance of Mrs. Dupre and Mrs. van Harten. The Galilee Gazette was published by this class last week, as newspaper reporters in the class kept their ears open dur- ing Bible to hear about Jesus miracles. On Thursday, the class had an auction, to finish off their social studies unit "Shopping In Our Community." Small items were bought & sold with plastic chips. The Grade ones have done well on their first spelling test. Grades 3, 4 & 5 continue to learn more about Saudi Arabia - everyone enjoyed our Arabian meal and excursion last week (particularly the boys)! Last week they studied the Saudi religion and discussed the in- fluence it has on their everyday life. In Science, the class has look- ed at recycling - how it is done in this area and the way it helps. They did an activity on wasteful packaging and alternatives to wasteful packaging. On Thursday they visited the Durham Recycl- ing Center. The senior class has gone to the lake for skating and hockey dur- ing phys-ed class and have really enjoyed this. Presently, the class is speech making. Many students are enthusiastic about their topics and their work is showing pro- mise. The rough drafts are due this Friday. In Social Studies they are learning about the Reforma- tion; in Science they are studying "Living Things." They are lear- ning the difference between mo- tion and locomotion. "Why do they always bug me when I'm on the phone?" which will be addressed at this workshop for parents which will be held at Durham House, Oshawa from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. on Monday, March 5, 1990.
