The Scugog Crisis Centre has been granted an additional 30,000 for the fiscal year which ends April 1, bringing the total grant this year to $49,000. A spokesperson for the Centre, which is located in Port Perry, said that part of the money will also go for office fur- niture, renting pagers for two staff persons, and perhaps for renting halls where staff people can talk to large or small groups about sexual abuse, assault, in- cest, and other issues that re- late to women. "The additional funds will certainly help, and we appre- ciate receiving them, but they still won't cover our total oper- ating costs," said the spokesper- son. In fact, the Centre is pro- jecting a budget this year of about $86,000, and $144,000 next year. Which means the Centre still must rely heavily on fund- raising and donations. The spokesperson said the Centre doesn't know at this time just how much money it will receive from the provincial government for the fiscal year that startsin April. If the Centre does not have sufficient funds to meet its next year's budget projections, some of the planned expanded servic- es and programs will be cut back. Meanwhile, in a statement released by the Ontario Coali- tion of Rape Crisis Centres, it was noted that the $1.8 million recently granted by the prov- 183 QUEEN ST POKT PERKY ONTARIO (4106) 985-6234 T.G. However, the demand for core services and the costs of those services far exceed the $1.8 mil- lion." And the Coalition says that money allocated to other organ- izations may end up duplicating services that have been provid- ed by Crisis Centres for years. The Coalition believes it should have "priority access" to some $20 million available from provincial departments other than the solicitor general. "Studies indicate that Rape Crisis Centres provide equiva- lent or superior services cost ef- fectively. The quality of service people of Ontario deserve can best be delivered through fund- ing the true experts- member centres of the Ontario Coalition of Rape Crisis Centres," the statement concludes. The Centre in Scugog offers a crisis phone line, counselling, victim assistance, public infor- mation, and community out- reach/relations. From October to December last year, the Scugog Centre re- ceived 61 crisis calls, which were followed up by 319 calls. The Centre is currently op- erating with two staff members, two trained volunteers and there are four other volunteers waiting to start the lengthy training process. The Centre serves a large geographical area including Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock Townships, and areas north of Lake Scugog, said the spokes- person. The snow fleas enjoy the sun Now that milder winter days are here, you can expect to see snow fleas. What appears to a layer of fine soot on the surface may not be soot at all, but a cluster of snow fleas, says Tom Farmer of the Ministry of Natural Re- sources office in Lindsay. More accurately known as springtails, these tiny, almost microscopic insects, have a spring-like mechanism in the tail, which allows them to move like the common flea. They also have six legs for standing and walking. Usually, they are round in rotton logs, soil, leaf mold or other damp, rotting vegetation. According to Mr. Farmer, they do not feed in the winter months, but just why they seem to appear in large numbers on sunny winter days is a bit of a mystery. The best guess is that their winter appearance is part of the matingritual. The MNR office has re- ceived numerous enquiries this year about the snow fleas, said Mr. Farmer.
