Guides celebrate litera by Heather McCrae The United Nations has declared 1990 International Literacy Year. Reading and writing are essential skills often - and mistakenly - taken for granted in Canada. READ CANADA was launched July 1, 1989 to help promote the United Nations International Literacy Year in 1990. Sponsored by Frontier College and under the patronage of the Governor General of Canada, READ CANADA was developed to help ensure that all Canadian children have books and stories in their lives. Last year in Ottawa, on Canada Day, hundreds of Ottawa area Guides, Pathfinders and Rangers' helped celebrate READ CANADA by making name tags, distribute bookmarks and inviting young and old to a reading tent to relax and enjoy a story either alone or in a group.. Throughout 1990 Guiders are encouraged to get their units in- volved in READ CANADA ac- tivities in their communities. By reading stories to young people and encouraging them to read themselves we can get our children hooked on books today and can create a more literate Canada for the future.
