General Motors announced last week that it has developed a potential method for recycling the plastic body panels used on General Motors' newest line of minivans. Pyrolysis, a decades old technology, is now being developed by the General Motors Advanced Engineering Staff for use in the waste management of plastic composite panels for automobiles. In the pyrolysis pro- cess, materials are decomposed by extreme heat in the absence of oxygen. "Pyrolysis may be the en- vironmentally sound method of waste management that we have been looking for in order to dispose of these sheet molding compounds," said Rich Taylor, General Motors of Canada's Director of Engineering. *'It may provide an alternative to landfill and other disposal methods such as incineration." GM is the largest user of com- posites in the auto industry. The Chevrolet Lumina APV and the Pontiac Trans Sport as well as the Chevrolet Corvette use sheet molding compound (SMC) in the large exterior panels. SMC in these applications offers enhanc- ed drivability which may lead to reduced corrosion and longer vehicle life. Current research will focus on using pyrolysis for SMC. They say the Durham Sep- arate Board has committed to applying to the provincial gov- ernment in 1992 for the funds to build such a school. ) St. Bernadette's has been operating as a Catholic Parish in Nestleton for the last three years, with Sunday services held in the Nestleton Communi- ty Hall with Father Tom Lynch of the St. Thomas More Parish in Millbrook. Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. Wygerde note that Catholic schools in Port Perry and Lind- say are now at capacity, and a new school in Nestleton would reduce busing time and relieve the enrolment pressures on the other schools. They are appealing to par- ents in Ward 4 or Manvers ex- plore the possibility of enrolling their children in this school this September. In SMC pyrolysis, the organic chemicals are thermally decom- posed at 1400°F (approx. 800°C) in the absence of oxygen). Once the process gets up to temperature using external fuel, the system is self-sustaining from the energy produced by pyrolysis. The SMC contains more than enough petrochemical energy to sustain the process, and the excess gas and oil can be removed. "SMC can be easily shredded and fed into the pyrolysis unit," said Taylor, "and this pyrolysis output can be effectively utilized. Some of the potential uses of SMC residue include filler in new SMC formulations, and other polymer composites such as RIM formula- tions or adhesives, and filler in other materials such as concrete and roofing shingles."". GM began a series of trial runs of the process in June, 1988. Members of the Society of the Plastics Industry SMC Automotive Alliance are par- ticipating in the GM tests. The tire and rubber industry is also evaluating pyrolysis to recy- cle scrap tires, however the steel - belts must first be removed, and the oil and | gas from tire pyrolysis contains sulfur. No such obstacles hinder the pyrolysis of SMC. "This is an important develop- ment for our waste management strategy," said Taylor. "By prac- tising the four "R's" of waste management: reduction, reuse, recycling and recovery, we are significantly reducing the waste we generate.
