UE ---- SR i Region says sewage plant not af capacity The sewage treatment plant for Port Perry is not oper- ating at close to maximum cap- city. In fact, the Durham Region works department, which oper- ates the treatment system, says there is enough capacity for a population increase of 1800 peo- ple, or nearly 500 new homes. This information was for- warded to Township council this month by the Works de- partment, which says the daily flow into the treatment facility last year was 460,000 imperial gallons. , : The system has a capacity to handle 700,000 gallons daily. Even with committed allo- cation for proposed new resi- dential development like the 90 condominium units, a senior cit- izens project and the 67 un- built registered lots in Port Perry, there is capacity for a planned condo development in the Water and Casimir Street area, says the report. There is a snag, however. The pumping station on Water Street is slated for expansion and improvements by the Re- gion this year, if Regional coun- cil votes the necessary money. But until that work is done, the Region will not be issuing any sewer connection permits inthe Port Perry area. It had been thought that the treatment facility (cell sys- tem) just west of Port Perry was operating at or near full capaci- ty. What the report suggests is that the population of Port Perry village could grow by some 2400 people: Letters Right on!!! To the Editor: About the Editorial Comment in last week's Port Perry Star, '"'On- ly money, $52 million." I totally agree with it and Scugog Councillor Yvonne Christie. We don't need two buildings for Durham Regional offices. My taxes are over $209.00 per month now. My monthly payments are very close to the point that I can't afford to raise a family and own a home here. The Editorial Comment was good but it ended without telling us what we can do about it. There must be thousands of people, tax payers, who feel the same way. Yours truly, S. Harper Port Perry. Threatened (From page 8) We need to adopt the idea that chemicals are used only as a last resort. We need to adopt national policies that provide fair returns to farmers who use safe practices. The bobolinks, orioles, wrens, partridges, pheasants, and many more birds are threatened because of corn rootworm insecticides. Please join our movement to save the environment, starting in our local farmers' fields. Robert Pittam. on behalf of "Farmers' Fine Feathered Friends" P.O.
