In the Pee Wee final at the tournament held Saturday In fs Port Perry, the Scugog Overhead Door squad doubled Oshawa Black Hawks 4-2 to win the gold medals. Brent Harper accepts trophy from Don Steele. Oshawa captain Is Hans-Michael Schnell and game MVP is Shane Watson from the Black Hawks. In the Atom final, Port Perry defeated Whitby 6-3. I want to first comment on the in- credible day that "Nike Air" Mike Morden had! Way to play Mike and he ended up with the tourna- ment MVP - very well deserved, I might add. They met the Atom Whitby team which they have battled closely all year. Whitby went ahead with less than 2 minutes in- to the 2nd period but 2 minutes later Trevor Smith and Justin Halligan worked hard to set up Port's first. The puck was passed to Kevin Hobbs who, as always, makes sure out in front and put it past the goalie. Two minutes later Whitby went ahead again. Port again came back quickly, on a great shot from a hard angle, by Justin Halligan. Assists go to Trevor Smith and Kevin Hobbs. Early in the third, Whitby went ahead but not for long, as this time Trevor Smith followed through with a great shot, putting it in. Assists to Mike Morden and Matt Phillips. This took the game into over- time, which saw 3 skaters on 3 and no goalie. It didn't take long, 9 seconds to be exact, before Whit- by pegged the net for a 4-3 win. Jamie Trick played a strong game in net making some great trapper and stick saves. These guys were sure fired up that day. They met a well disciplined, hard working team from Aurora for game No. 2. Aurora put the on- ly marker in, in the first period. Mike Morden scored Ports first goal on a great shot...the only goal of the second period. Assist on this one to a great playmaker - Kevin Hobbs. This game made it to another 3 on 3 in overtime. What a day for the fans. Port was ready this time and never gave the puck up. As soon as it was dropped, Matt Phillips took possession, Mike Morden picked it up and headed for the net. It seemed like eterni- ty before Mike shot. The puck bounced around the bars, inside the net and came back out - But everyone knew it was in . - at least all the Port fans were sure! This put Port in the championship game against...who else? but Whitby. The Port boys came out and it was as if they already had the trophies engraved. Mike Morden took the puck past 5 Whitby players, three times for 3 unanswered goals! Hats off to Mike - Way to go! Assists on these goals went to teammates Derek Leeming (1), Trevor Smith (1), Shane Norton (2), and Danny Robinson (1). From here on in each time . Whitby scored, Port came back again. It was a game where they wouldn't let up. Whitby scored 3 more, but Port scored 3 too. Matt Phillips notched a beautiful unassisted goal after leaving the defense standing still with some awesome dekes. Matt Phillips scored a second beauty on a well set up play by Derek Leeming and Chris Drury. Jason Hopkins took his time when picking a spot on the empty net, unassisted. Paul Shrigley played a strong game in net, coming up with some good solid saves. He was on the bottom of a big pile up when the game was over and they were "champs!!"' These guys would like to extend their congratulations to another fine performance by the Pee Wee B's who also were champions on Saturday. It was clearly Port Perry Day at the arena on Sat. as both the Atom B and Pee Wee B teams won their respective champion- ships in the tournament. Con- gratulations from the Pee Wees to the Atoms. I don't know how many fans & players knew before the tourney that the Port team has won this trophy for the last 2 years. (I knew - its the job of a good writer to do research). The guys had a job to do and they did it in style I might add. First off the team would like to thank Minor Hockey for a well run tournament. And to the parents and fans a special thank you for all your support from the stands. Port's first match-up for the day was against the LNHL Black Hawks. Oshawa took a 1-0 lead but less than one minute later Daryl Bourgeois and Jeremy Geer did some fine passing to Brent Harper who rolled it up the front of the goalie and into the net. With less than 1 minute left in the first Rick Olaisen shot the puck to Matt Hobbs who carried it behind the net, tapped it over to a waiting Jason Phillips and he put it into the open side of the net. There was no scoring in the se- cond. Oshawa tied it up with a power play goal early in the third. A scramble in front of the Oshawa net gave Port the oppor- tunity to take the lead. Matt Hobbs finally got the puck where it should be with assists going to Jason Phillips and Ian Shrigley. Rick Olaisen sent a pass up to Kent Taylor who raced up the center and held onto the puck un- til the last possible moment and slid it in the side of the net. This would eventually prove to be the game winner. Oshawa closed the gap to 4-3 but Port put the pressure on and scored 2 more. Jeremy Geer car- ried the puck behind the net, pass- ed it out front to Daryl Bourgeois and he tapped it over to Brent Harper and into the net. Rick Olaisen got the puck to Kent Taylor. Kent got it to Jason Reid who put the rush on and made a beautiful shot into the 5-hole en- ding game 1 in Port's favour 6-3. Game 2 Port played the team from Newmarket and won by a score of 5-0. Ian Shrigley started the count by deflecting a shot by Jason Phillips. A backhander by Kent Taylor assisted by Jason Reid made it 2-0. Only scoring in the second was another deflected shot this time by Brent Harper assists to Ian McCready and Jason Phillips. Early in the third Brent Harper travelled from one end to the other and put Port ahead 4-0 with some good teamwork from Daryl Bourgeois and Jeremy Geer. Our final goal was scored on another backhand tap by Jason Phillips assisted by Ian McCready. James Paterson made the saves when it counted and was rewarded a shut-out for his ef- forts. This double win put Port in- to the championship game. Port once again faced the Oshawa LNHL Black Hawks as they were fortunate enough to work their way back up to the championship game. Oshawa took control of the game and scored first. It wasn't until the last 5 sec. of the first and a lonely puck sitting on the goal line just waiting for Brent Harper to tap it in, that Port tied it up. This all came about on a good rush from Brent, Brett Lawson and Jeremy Geer. PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 27, 1990 -- 3) Port Pee Wees make it 3 straight tournament wins Oshawa took the lead again in the second and Port fans had to wait 4 anxious minutes for the guys to tie it up again on another interesting goal. Jeremy Geer and Brent Harper got the puck to Daryl Bourgeois in the corner. Daryl decided to clear it to the front of the net but instead the puck found itself sneeking between the goalies blade and the post. Neat play, Daryl! Ian Shrigley did some outstan- ding stickhandling around the Oshawa team, scooted behind the net and lifted it in unassisted. This turned out to be the game winner and gave this team their first tourney championsip. Way to be guy! Down to the 2 sec. mark for the - icing on the cake honours to Daryl Bourgeois assist to Brent Harper. Daryl proved to the fans that you . can (literally) sit down on the job and get your work done. There was no scoring in the third but the fans from both teams were on the edges of their seats all the time. End to end ac- tion was fantastic. Our boys handed in a TEAM ef- fort every game and were very deserving winners. The coaches were working hard too. I'm sure Mr. Don Steele (sponsor of our team) was extra proud when he had the opportunity to present his team the Championship Trophy for the first time. I keep telling you this is a Special little team. They kept up the tradition!!! Juveniles set to end series The Port Perry Key-Bar Juveniles have a two games to one lead in their best of seven OHA series with Stirling, and the team had a chance to put the wraps on things in Stirling Monday evening. The results of that encoun- ter missed the Star printing deadline, but the team coaching staff expressed confidence that a solid effort by the Juveniles would produce the needed victo- ry. ~ If Stirling won Monday night to force the fifth and de- ciding game in the series, it will go Wednesday evening in Port Perry at 9:00 PM. The Key-Bar gang had a great chance to put Stirling away Saturday night at the Scugog Arena as they enjoyed a 2-0 lead in games in this best of five affair. But after five straight playoff wins, the Port team came out flat in this one and Stirling went home with a 7-6 victory to force game four Mon- day evening. On Feb. 19, the Port squad took a 2-0 lead in the series as they defeated Stirling 8-3 at the Scugog Arena. After trailing 2-0 in the first, the Juveniles caught a life and then scored four straight in the final frame to cement the win. Jamie Menzies had two with singles by Stitt, Harman, Steele, Fitzgerald, Douma and Gibson. Lockwood notched two in a losing cause for Stirling. The winner of this series will tangle with Hespeler in the next playoff round. A report in last week's Port Perry Star said the winner of the Port Perry- Stirling series would play in a round-robin. That was incor- rect. The next opponent is Hes- peler.
