This team representing the Port Perry i | Curling Club In Junior Mixed Curling won the Zone 5 championships, and now move on to compete in the Division finals to be held at Bayview Curling Club on March 2 and 3. Malmont Atoms On Friday night the Malmont Farm Atom "A's" travelled to Stouffville for some exhibition action. With two of our big guns out, the team had to really buckle down to stay close. We hope to see both Timmy Fitzpatrick and Tommy Chambers back in the lineup soon. The home team opened the scoring early in the first to take a short-lived lead. Seconds later Port knotted the score at one and a slick goal by Brad Morton from Kevin Gray and Daryl McEnaney. The rest of the first was scoreless with Port having numerous powerplay oppor- tunities but were unable to cash in. The home team once again pull- ed ahead late in the second period but our guys replied before the buzzer, to start the final frame 2 up. This tally was provided by Todd Parry from Jeff Clarke and Mike Morden. Port took the lead with just over 6 minutes left in the game when Brad Shanley potted one after some shifty stick work by Brad Morton and Kent Johnston. It looked like we would put one in the win column but Stouffville applied tremendous pressure to tie it up in the closing minutes. After our long lay-off we were for all intents and purposes running on fumes for much of the third "period. A good effort by all hands kept us in it all the way. Many thanks to Mike Morden and Paul Shrigley who came up from the "B's"' to help out in the trenches. Special mention goes to Mike Heasman who had a par- ticularly strong game on defence. Jason Logan, Kent Johnston and Rob Murphy defended our blueline admirably as well. The foreward lines of Kevin Gray, Todd Parry, Brad Shanley, Daryl McEnaney, Brad Morton and Jeff Clarke provided the fans with some offensive displays that have not been seen in awhile. As stated last week, the Allens Siding Tweens were to play against Whitby this past weekend with the winner going to "AA" final, where neither wanted to go. Humerous discussions took place with the Ontario Ringette Association and the Regional representatives, and it was even- tually decided that neither team belonged in that category and the foremat was changed, with the winner two out of three games go- ing to the "A" division and the other team out. When we arrived at the Brooklin arena Saturday morning for the first game, we found that Pickering was not impressed, as it was their intention to have an easy slide into the "A" category. The Port Stingers knew what was required of them and put together back-to-back games that were their best efforts of the year, winning the first two by identical scores of 8-3, to win the prelims and advance to the All Ontario finals. The 3rd game had to be played on Sunday, but the girls relaxed and worked on some techniques and dropped it 5-2. From the opening whistle, the girls entertained their hometown fans to an exciting brand of ringette, At the end of the first period in game one, it was 4-2 for Port and Pickering had picked up the first goal but this was all that was required to get our scoring machine started. Amy Parliament notched the first 2 goals at the 7:57 mark and 4:10 with Tammy Pillman getting the assist along with Kim Pop- pleton on the first, and Kim also on the second. Lyndsay Dutkewich jumped in quickly after this, as did Megan Marlowe, Michelle Fitpatrick, Amanda Webb and Megan all scored again in the second period and a sur- prise goal was scored by Kim (unassisted) on a flip shot from the extended zone line, which sur- prised the Pickering goalie. With one under thier belt and \ one to go, the girls returned Satur- day for a 7:30 start and had one thing on their minds, 'lets get it over now!" Pickering got the first goal 3 minutes into the game and it started to look like we had lost our scoring touch until'8:16 when Karen Kett dropped a perfect pass to Michelle and she beat the goalie, and they never looked back. It was 3-1 for Port at the end of the first period and 8-3 at the final buzzer. Scoring in all 3 games went as follows: Michelle Fitzpatrick 3 goals, 2 assists, Kim Poppleton 1 goal, 4 assists, Jennifer Morden 1 assist, Lyndsay Dutkewich 2 goal, 1 assist, Amanda Webb 2 goals, 4 assists, Amy Parliament 5 goals, 2 assists, Megan Marlowe 3 goals, Karen Kett 2 goals, 5 assists, Tammy Pillman 1 assist, and Shannon Fox 2 assist. The games were not without their price, as Tracy Pelow had to leave game 3 with a sprained knee and Amy filled in for the re- maining 3 minutes. To this point Tracy filled the hole between the pipes perfectly, despite not feel- ing well and kept her goals PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 27, 1990 -- 33 against average in tact. Shannon Fox, still nursing a bad knee, decided to move back into defense with Kim and Jen- nifer, and the 3 of them were the back bone of the team, stopping power plays, keeping Pickering sharp shooters away and bringing the ring out to where our forwards could take over. Good job girls. Amanda, Tammy, Lyndsay, AmyXKaren, Megan and Michelle did outstanding jobs, killing time in the neutral zone, attacking the Pickering goal, and setting up good chances for each other around the net. ¢) Sun shines for Tweens We now have 5 weeks to recover from all of our problems, before we enter the Ontario finals, which are being held in Whitby the end of March. Over 4 days, the girls will play 6 other teams for the chance at 3 medals. . Tammy continued to play well, despite a nagging sore back, and Megan had to sit out game 3 with a severely bruised elbow, which occurred when she was taken down hard at the end of game 2. League playoffs continue next week and further details will follow. Kub Kar rally coming up Pineridge Annual Kub Kar Ral- ly is being held this week at the Port Perry Legion. Cubs from around the district will compete to see who has built the fastest car. Also the cubs will be judged on the design of their Kars. This is truly an event to be enjoyed by boys of all ages. Hockey Draw Winners One of the last year's winners, David Emmerson, went on to win first at the Regional Competition. Come out and watch the races.
