Durham Board can offer help in traumatic events The Durham Board of Educa- tion does not have a Tragic Events Response Team that could be called in to help stu- dents cope with the aftermath of a tragedy. But board chairman Pauline Laing believes that this re- gion's students would receive the help they need in dealing with their emotions if an event like the shooting at General Brock High School in Burling- ton happened here. Last week, three students were wounded after a gun- toting youth walked into the Halton Region high school and began shooting. In 1984, Halton Region formed a 12-member Tragic Events Response Team when six students were killed in a car-train collision. Since then the crisis team has been called in to deal with 50 other events. "We (Durham) do not have a response team, not in terms of people identified," Ms. Laing said. But each school does have a document that outlines how to help students cope with the death of a fellow classmate or teacher, she said. "And we do have people that can be called in, such as social workers and psychologists," she added. Last year in the Metro Toron- to school system, one student died, another was injured, and a vice-principal escaped injury in three separate shooting inci- dents. Ms. Laing said there have "beén®no reported cases of gun fire in Durham schools. When asked whether stu- ~ dents resorted to more accessi- ble weapons such as knives and baseball bats, Ms. Laing that may be a possibility . "In very scattered occurrenc- "es from time to time, but noth- ing in a massive scale," she re- plied. "I don't have any record of a youth being apprehended for the use of a weapon (on school property)," Ms. Laing said. Since she became chairman a Whitby man trustee on Durham Bd. Whitby businessman George Milosh has been named trustee to the Durham Board of Education. He was sworn in at the trustees meeting February 26. Milosh was chosen from a list of 38 individuals who sub- mitted applications for the trus- tee's seat that was held by John Buchanan. Buchanan was dumped by trustees after missing three consecutive Board meetings. Milosh is an independent businessman who resides in Whitby. The Board accepted with regret at its Feb. 26 meeting the retirement of superintendent of schools Bob Martin. He'll be retiring December 31 after a 37-year career in edu- cation, 31 of them with the Dur- ham Board and its predeces- sors. Trustees wished Mr. Mar- tin well in his retirement. year ago, Ms. Laing said that the board has had to help stu- dents deal with the sudden and unexpected death of a teacher, a couple of student deaths due to health reasons, and a stu- dent death caused by an acci- dent.
