STO TS TO RP ar 14 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 6, 1990 Society releases new Care The Alzheimer Society of Durham Region has recently released a new publication enti- tled "Caregiving Guide- Especially for Alzheimer Fami- ies." This book, was two years in the making, and is a collabora- tive effort between the Society and Information Oshawa. It is designed as a self-help guide to inform readers about the disease and the community support services available in Durham Region. The text is written in everyday language, and in large print, making it easier for people of all ages to read. Alzheimer Disease is an ill- ness of the brain that affects a person's ability to remember, think, and reason. It can also ef- fect the ability to walk, talk, eat, and control emotions. It is estimated that about 300,000 Canadians currently suffer from the disease, which has no known cause or cure. Elizabeth Fulford, president of Alzheimer Society of Dur- ham Region, stated the Society wanted to do something to help inform the public of the disease, and where to get help. "This is a devastating dis- ease, there is no cure, there is no rainbow at the end," she said. According to Audrey MacL- ean, executive director of Alz- heimer Society of Durham, the book offers information and support. She added it is also sc the person with the disease, or the caregiver is not just left hanging with no support. Mrs. Maclean also stated the book was only possible be- cause of a generous donation made by Babs McGibbon. Her husband recently passed away due to the disease, and the book is dedicated in the memory of her husband Charles Campbell McGibbon. .One section of the book enti- tled "Just For You", provides useful information on services for the caregiver and a pullout 24 hour emergency services card. This section is to help the reader in whatever role he/she is taking on. This section lists information centres, transpor- tation, recreation centres for those who wish to get away for a while, financial, and legal com- panies, special clothing cen- tres, hospitals, daycares, and nursing services to name a few. Also included in this guide are library, and hair care ser- vices that will come to the home, for those who find it diffi- cult to get out for any length of me. "When preparing this book- let, we tried to imagine our- selves as the user. When it is neat, and cleanly organized more people take the time to use it," she said. She also continued by saying that this book is the one orga- nized thing for these people who are otherwise living in a world of confusion. The idea of this caregivers book, came from family mem- bers who expressed their frus- tration with the number of pamphlets and brochures need- ed to find servicesin the area. Other points of interest in the guide are a section on the history of the disease, including symptoms, the stages a patient goes through, myths, treat- ments, and a glossary of terms commonly used regarding the disease. There are 5,000 copies of this edition of the book currently available to the public. Anyone wishing a copy may contact the Alzheimer Society of Durham Region, or their local library. In Scugog Township, the new book can be picked up free of charge at Information Scugog, located at 208 North Street, in Port Perry. Elizabeth Fulford, Wendy Orton, and Audrey MacLean worked hard for two years complling information for a book- let on Alzheimer Disease. The result of their efforts is a book entitled Caregiver Guide Especially for Alzheimer Families.
